Howdy,

I recently updated my Ubuntu Oneiric to KDE 4.8 through the PPA, and since then KDE always starts with "factory" screen settings (800x600 cloned screens). I have a dual setup with my laptop's screen and another monitor plugged to the VGA port.

Actually, I've noticed that on setting my screens as I like them, closing my session and logging again, everything will start loading as usual, but after a few seconds my X server will die and send me back to KDM, with my screens back to factory settings. From this I surmise that something in my startup is crashing my session --most probably something related to the screen config.

I tried removing my ~/.kde/share/config/krandrrc file, which had three entries for every screen, and configuring things again, but nothing changed, except that only the Display section was recreated on krandrrc.

Any ideas? It's getting tiresome to setup things every startup. :-\

My original krandrrc:

Code: Select all
[Display]
ApplyOnStartup=true
StartupCommands=xrandr --output LVDS1 --pos 0x768 --mode 1680x1050 --refresh 60.1085\nxrandr --output VGA1 --pos 300x0 --mode 1024x768 --refresh 84.9967\nxrandr --output LVDS1 --primary

[Screen_0]
OutputsUnified=false
UnifiedRect=0,0,0,0
UnifiedRotation=1

[Screen_0_Output_CRT1]
Active=true
Rect=392,0,1152,864
RefreshRate=75
Rotation=1

[Screen_0_Output_LVDS]
Active=true
Rect=0,768,1680,1050
RefreshRate=60.108470916748
Rotation=1

[Screen_0_Output_LVDS1]
Active=true
Rect=0,768,1680,1050
RefreshRate=60.108470916748
Rotation=1

[Screen_0_Output_LVDS2]
Active=true
Rect=0,768,1680,1050
RefreshRate=60.108470916748
Rotation=1

[Screen_0_Output_VGA-0]
Active=true
Rect=300,0,1024,768
RefreshRate=84.9966888427734
Rotation=1

[Screen_0_Output_VGA1]
Active=true
Rect=300,0,1024,768
RefreshRate=84.9966888427734
Rotation=1

[Screen_0_Output_VGA2]
Active=true
Rect=300,0,1024,768
RefreshRate=84.9966888427734
Rotation=1

After renaming it and redoing the setup:
Code: Select all
[Display]
ApplyOnStartup=true
StartupCommands=xrandr --output LVDS1 --pos 0x768 --mode 1680x1050 --refresh 60.1085\nxrandr --output VGA1 --pos 300x0 --mode 1024x768 --refresh 84.9967\nxrandr --output LVDS1 --primary

What video driver are you using, and which version of X are you running?
I have 2 dual screen setups (home and work, although they're fixed, i.e. no laptop) and I am not seeing this issue.
Are you seeing this issue when you resume from suspend to RAM and hibernation as well?

I'm running a (mostly) vanilla Ubuntu Oneiric. I'm almost certain the problem was introduced by KDE, as it appeared after updating to KDE 4.8 (and nothing else). Not sure what good my packages' versions could do, but here they are:

# uname -a
Linux qwerty 3.0.0-15-generic #26-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 20 17:23:00 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

# dpkg -l xserver-xorg
ii xserver-xorg 1:7.6+7ubuntu7 X.Org X server

# video-card-in-use.sh
According to /var/log/Xorg.0.log, you're using drivers:
glx v1.0.0 by X.Org Foundation.
intel v2.15.901 by X.Org Foundation.
vesa v2.3.0 by X.Org Foundation.

Most probably I will just format and reinstall, since this Ubuntu went through enough major updates already (even though I'm running xrandr at startup automatically now). Thanks for your answer anyway. :)
