Memory widget not displaying content after login

I did a quick search of the forum but didn't see anything about this problem. The issue is that whenever I re/start KDE4, the memory plasma widget is blank. I have to kill it and then add another instance each time.

I searched through various ~/.kde4/share/config files to try to find what was controlling the applet, but ultimately I couldn't isolate anything. Any suggestions to fix this admittedly minor but very annoying bug?

Can you verify that "ksysguardd" is running on startup?

Hey there, I thought I would append to this thread since the starter hasn't replied and I seem to be having the exact same problem.

I reinstalled a version of Kubuntu 12.04 and the "Memory Status" widget seems to be blank every time I restart my computer and also have to start a new instance of the widget. My description of the problem is exactly the same as userlander. All the other monitoring widgets seem to be working fine, it's just the "Memory Status" one.

@ bcooksley,
I can confirm that "ksysguardd" is running at startup...

Please let me know if you require any other information :)

Peace Out 8)

If you add the widget after startup, does it work?

Thanks so much for the quick reply! ....

And ye it works perfectly when I make another instance of the widget after start-up, the problem occurs when the PC is shut down or restarted, then the widget appears blank.

Hm, unusual.
If you simply stop Plasma, and start it up again, does that work?

Code: Select all
kquitapp plasma-desktop
plasma-desktop &

Hey again...

No unfortunately that doesn't work either... I've installed Kubuntu on my netbook too and it seems to be doing the exact same thing. Possible bug maybe? Any other ideas maybe?

Another weird thing, I've created another panel and put all my monitors on there. Although the the are much smaller than the one's on my desktop. When I restart my computer the "Memory Status" widget does NOT appear blank. It's only the one on the desktop. Does same thing on my netbook.

Thanks for your patients and help so far... :)

Interesting, for me restarting Plasma still yields a working memory applet on my KDE Trunk system.
Also unusual that it works in the panel, but not on the main desktop.

Do you have other applets which may be using ksysguardd on your system? There could be a race condition possibly here...

Hey again bcooksley,

Well I think we found the conflict between the two applets... "Memory Status" widget and the "System Load Viewer" widget. It look like when "System Load Viewer" is enabled the "Memory Status" widget appears blank, as soon as I remove the SLV the MS widget starts up perfectly. The weird thing is the widgets in my panel don't get affected, they like isolated or something... Well I don't mind not having a SLV, but looks like its definitly some form of bug.

Thanks sooo much bcooksley... Should I report bug or just leave it?

Peace Out 8)

Edit: On my netbook, if the SLV is even in my panel then the MS does not display correctly. So not even one instance of SLV can be run on my netbook without it producing his odd occurrence.

Please report a bug - there is definitely a race condition occurring which should not be.

I've just come across this bug too. I've filed a bug report here.

I've realised my bug report is a dupe of this one. As per this report, a simple workaround is to move the "Memory Status" widget to the left of the "System Load Viewer" widget.
