KDE 4.x general problems

Wed Apr 11, 2012 9:20 am
I am using linux since Suse 6.0, and always I was using KDE. I don't know
why, I don't like Gnome. Also I am programmer since 1987, mostly on
Microsoft based systems. I have began programming on Linux since 2001. In
the last few years I am using Lazarus/Free pascal. I have installed Debian
6.0.4 on a normal, simple dual-core Intel CPU computer.

Trying to use the new plasmoid KDE I have encountered several problems:
- this plasmoid skin is very hard to understand how it works, rather
complicated, it took me 2 days to figure it out, needed to reinstall
several times, because I have mixed something and I couldn't find a way
to rollback it,
- the good old KPackage package manager is missing, Synaptic cannot be used
to install a downloaded deb package, I have to do it manually with dpkg,
- in my software I am using the Times New Roman truetype font from
Windows... I got used to it and I like it... I can install it under the
new KDE, but I cannot make my Lazarus program should use it...
- after install there is no sound, I have to play around by choosing the
master channel in KMix,
- Amarok is very complicated to use and often doesn't starts, cannot
play anything,
- Konqueror also too complicated, hard to understand the way it works,

The old 3.5 KDE has none of the above problems, everything could be done
from the Control Center and everything was working perfectly.

Best regards

You will get better response/help if you post your problems individually in the proper forums - none of your issues are plasma related

I don't use a deb based system but does not Synaptic allow you to set one of your folders as a repo? Most deb based systems are now, or starting to, use Packagekit with the Apper or Muon front ends for package management http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/sh ... tent=84745 http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q= ... nrSMEI5GEw

Lazarus - in systemsttings -> applicationa appearance -> GTK styles and fonts, did you set it to use KDE fonts in GTK apps?
From their wiki you could try I have Ubuntu Breezy/Mandriva KDE3 and my fonts in Lazarus IDE look too big

If Lazarus is compiled with Gtk1.2, the settings in Gnome Preferences/Font don't have any effect as they are related to Gtk2. You could try this solution: Create a file named .gtkrc.mine in your home directory (if it's not already there) and add these lines to it:
style "default-text" {
fontset = "-*-arial-medium-r-normal--*-100-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1,\
-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--*-100-*-*-*-*-*-*"
}

class "GtkWidget" style "default-text"

If this is not enough try and create also a .gtkrc symlink to .gtkrc.mine . It worked in this way under Xubuntu 7.10, Mandriva 2009.0 KDE3.

What version of Amarok? I want something more akin to the 3.5 version look at Clementine

Konqueror was ok in 3.5 but not usable in 4.x? In what ways?

OpenSuse Leap 42.1 x64, Plasma 5.x

Yes, it might be that I was too lazy to take apart my problems individually. Sorry for that...

Synaptic... I haven't tried Your solution, but my question is that why it has
to make it so complicated something which was working well before ?
I think that this is one of the main differences with Windows, that I install
everything in one move and don't have to fumble around more hours after
install... KPackage was quite usuable package manager...

My program written in Lazarus works perfectly with the Times New Roman font
under KDE 3.5, without any modification that You suggested. In KDE 4.x (if
I remember well then KDE 4.6 from Debian 6.0.4) I couldn't get it work.
I have done it manually the same structure for the installed fonts that is
was in KDE 3.5, but even that didn't solved the problem...

I have to install an easy to use operating system on 5 computer for two
companies. The employees are used to Windows, so I have to show them how
easy is using this Linux. Also it matters that how much I have work around
with these 5 computers to workaround the listed problems.
So these problems plus the network problems were too many obstacles for
using Debian 6.0.4, and I have returned to Debian 5.0.10, which uses
KDE 3.5. That works perfectly!
