Empty zones on panels

Is there a way to tell panels where to put the "free space"? In example, in the panel of the image, when the system tray is not crowdy populated, two ugly empty zones appears around the K menu icon.

It would be nice to be able to tell the panel where locate this empty space, or tell it to automatically adjust to the size of his plasmoids.
