Recently i installed a new handy daemon for my macbook air that changes the backlight screen and keyboard intensity based on the macbook's light sensor
https://github.com/poliva/lightum/
"Lightum is a daemon to control the keyboard brightness and screen backlight on MacBook based laptops."

However, everytime the daemon changes the screen backlight intensity, then, KDE pop ups an annoying OSD bar indicating the brightness level.

First of all, i think that is really unnecesary to display such visual indicator, since is more than enough to see the screen brightness as indication for the screen brightness... don't you think?.

It make sense to have an visual notification for sound volume changes, but for screen brightness? Mac os doesn't have this for the screen brightness, but does have one for the keryboard backlight, which i think is unnesesary too.

Anyway, i really want to disable this feature since i consider it unnecesary, distracting and rebundant. My question is how can i disable it?

You can do that by going into the Global Shortcuts control panel in System Settings and, under the "kded" section, remove the key binding for brightness up and brightness down.

In many cases the BIOS of the system will respond and change the screen brightness, instead of the operating system (no idea if this is how it is done on Mac computers).

I've checked the code, and unfortunately it is not possible to disable the OSD without disabling KDE Power Management completely.

I am also using mac air with lightum. I notice with the latest kde, it also have OSD for keyboard brightness now. It gets really annoying because keyboard and screen brightness OSD keep showing up all the time :(

I am not familiar with kde's code base, @bcooksley , could you point me to the code so I can study it and possiblly add a toggle for OSD?

The code in question is located in kde-workspace, in powerdevil/daemon/.
You can retrieve the kde-workspace Git repository by cloning it from KDE anongit.

I have an Asus laptop running wildguppy, a tool like lightum, and have the same issue. I think it would be great if we can disable backlight OSD by the Control Panel. How can it be suggested to the KDE core team?

Feature requests can be filed at bugs.kde.org, on in the Brainstorm. Please note that it has been suggested that automatic changes carried out by Powerdevil (KDE Power Management) itself will not trigger the display of the OSD. In certain versions this did occur due to a bug / regression - however this has since been corrected.
