Recently my computer auto-updated from the Mageia repository
Since the upgrade none of my desktop icons are present, There is just a link to the shortcut config file, if I double click on it it opens that config file in KWrite. The same thing has happened to the icons on the Quick Launch (left hand) side of the Toolbar. I am unable to create new icons, when I click "Create new link to application" there is no browse to app field" in the box that opens. If you want to see what my desktop looks like, just create a shortcut to a normal text file Fortunately the application launcher still works so I'm not down completely Also my system clock is locked to UTC as all the local options have disappeared from the "Date and Time" section of the KDE Settings folder. They are still there in MCC but KDE must over ride the MCC settings. I feel that the update must have missed a file which has resulted in the sym links from the short cuts to the actual programs being broken. The same thing must have happened to delete all the time zone options except for UTC. Can someone please give me an idea of where to start looking to solve this problem and advise where I can download a replacement file to get my time zone options back. I've posted this on the Mageia forums but no-one there seems to be able to help. TIA Brodo |

Try running "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" first. Then check .xsession-errors if there are errors: be on the lookout specifically for errors of incompatible library versions (I suspect that the upgrade did not went as smooth as planned).

Me too.....:-S I ran the file as you suggested, once from a console with the X-server shut down and again from "Konsole" with an X-session running. both files show a number of errors but I don't know which ones may be significant. I have linked to them below, #1 was taken with the X-server off, #2 is with KDE running. xsession-errors1 xsession-errors2 Thanks Brodo |

How are you using your desktop? As traditional view of Desktop folder, or with many folder views?

Ok, first of all, are your paths still there on the disk? (likely yes, but no harm in asking).
Open a konsole, close plasma-desktop (kquitapp plasma-desktop) then restart it from there (issue "plasma-desktop") and see whether any meaningful errors are printed on the terminal. Also, can you see whether this issue also is present with a new user account?

I presume so as Task Manager still works
Error messages as follows (Duplicates have been edited to save space)
And that was the limit to the number of lines available in Konsole. i.e. It did not go back to the command prompt. When I opened Konquerer to post this (It's the first time I've used a browser on this machine) it gave the error
Yes it is (should have mentioned that before). Brodo |

And obviously BB code didn't work when I posted from Konquerer.

Your post had the disable BBCode option enabled for some reason. I have now re-enabled that option.

Now this thing is odd (although unlikely to have been the cause of your issue). Can you check whether you have a "folderview" package installed? (The name may not be exact)

According to MCC there is a package called "plasma-applet-folderview" installed. There is also no /usr/share/indexhtml folder on the machine Brodo |

Can you please provide a screenshot of the broken desktop?
Have you tried adding a Folder View and configuring it to view ~/Desktop/?
