Multi-monitor support issues

Mon Jun 18, 2012 12:53 pm
Updated today and multi-monitor support has changed considerably. The biggest problem is that there now seems to be no way to turn off a second monitor without unplugging that monitor. Am I missing something here? There needs to be a way to turn this off...

Other problems:
-Pulseaudio is gone
-Cairo-dock wont start on start up
-Shutdown and logoff shortcuts and buttons dont work
-Really slow plasma startup. I used to have about a 20 sec wait between when I hit enter at the login screen and when the KDE chimes went off. Now its at around 2 min. Theres a python script attempting to run during this time...my guess is that its cairo-dock trying to open.
-Display quality is sometimes worse than before

Is there a way to undo these most recent updates?

Been fiddling around with this more. I think the problem is that multi-monitor support used to be configured solely at the Nvidia Server Settings menu. Now, it can also be configured through System Settings > Display and Monitor and these two programs are not playing well together. I used to have to manually turn on my second monitor, which I had a convenient script for (using Auto-Disper). That script is now broken and my second monitor, a TV, is on automatically when I turn the system on, regardless of whether the TV is actually on or not. Ive always had problems with windows opening on the wrong screen...now they open on the wrong screen and its not even on.

Is there anyway to disable the KDE multi monitor support program and rely only on Nvidia?

/etc/X11/xorg.conf is now missing. When running the Auto-Disper script, I get this error:
Code: Select all
could not get scaling for screen CRT-0, reverting to "default"
could not get scaling for screen CRT-1, reverting to "default"
could not get scaling for screen DFP-0, reverting to "default"
could not get scaling for screen DFP-1, reverting to "default"

Where did these other four screens come from? Where is my xorg.conf file?

Updating KDE should not have affected xorg.conf. Given you appear to be using the Nvidia drivers, was this update to the new beta drivers which now support RandR properly?

Hmmm....would I get beta drivers from having http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu in sources?

Possibly, but I do not know if Nvidia drivers are included in that repository.
Updating to a bleeding edge version of X however could have caused the multi-monitor issues as well however.

Okay, starting to figure it out. Checked my update from yesterday. I now have nvidia 295.53. Auto-disper no longer works, but autorandr does so I can modify my script and get my switch back. I really wish my second monitor wasnt on by default....

The pulseaudio issue seems to be a totally different problem.

That was easier to spot than I thought....should have checked the history for the update. Thanks for the help.

Good to hear the multi-monitor issues are solved as such.

For Pulseaudio, please try a new user account, to see if it works properly there (to ensure it isn't a system wide problem)?
