I am using KDE 4.4. After clicking the "cashew" and choose "Zoom out", the desktop changes to a plain background and all my icons on the desktop are gone. Any idea on how to get back the icons and the original desktop (with my wallpaper)?

Sorry, but it seems you possibly may have struck one of many bugs which exist with the ZUI implementation of multiple desktops which existed in KDE 4.4. To avoid this in the future, I would recommend upgrading to KDE 4.8 - which has the new Activities system (which works well).

In regards to fixing your current system - can you try zooming out again, and trying to locate the thumbnail of your desktop? Once you have found it, try to Zoom into it.
