KDE (Plasma?) Not working AT ALL

Wed Jul 25, 2012 1:42 pm
[bug]I'm running Kubuntu 12.04 on VMWare and I recently did a system update and installed some new programs. I was careless and didn't save multiple screenshots of the system. Anyway, after the installations I restarted the system and now everything is really screwed up.

Problems

1. Keyboard Shortcuts do not work
2. I can only have ONE Virtual Desktop. When I change it to 4 desktops and 2 rows (or anything other than one) it only stays at one desktop.
3. Windows are immovable. They are locked in place when opened.
4. Windows do not have any buttons to minimize, maximize, or close. You can only close a window by going to File --> Quit .
5. Windows always stay on top of Kickoff Application Starter. Must close window before you can start another application.
6. Custom icons assigned to activities in Activity Manager have disappeared.

These are just the problems I've seen so far. I have tried doing another system update, restarted multiple times, but nothing has solved issue. REALLY wish I had saved multiple screenshot backups but I won't make that mistake again. Huge pain in the rear and I would appreciate if somebody could tell me how to reset something to fix this.

you apps run fine?

you should create and log in as a new user to see if this is a config corruption or a system wide issue

does disabling composting help with moving windows? (alt+shft+F12)

if you restart Kwin (in Konsole) are there error messages? kwin --restart

sounds like a kwin issue

Wow, so I tried kwin --restart. Apparently kwin had been uninstalled so no wonder I had all these window issues. Anyway, I reinstalled it in 2 seconds and now everything is fine. Thanks for the help.
