Old school KDE

Wed Oct 24, 2012 10:17 am
I know this is generating a lot on hate, but I have to ask:"Can we get old KDE2 style back to KDE-desktop?"

This new Plasma desktop is useless for normal work use. The more simple desktop is the more powerful it is. Couple years ago, desktop use 92MB memory to run. There was blue backround with icons. Small, powerful efective. If You wanted icon to destop, simply klick right-button and "sent to desktop". And there it was.

Now we have all kind of plastic, visible, shading, multi-user destops on one desktop. It use more than 600MB memory. It´s slow, now we can´t copy icons to desktop, there is new "gagget" from every new icon, and all programs see through others.

To people who are using from to to six programs for work, old version was better. Nowadays I use nearly one day trying to change desktop old-fashion model, after installing OS. There is "change classic style", but it desn´t get rid off Plastics or widgets or any new efects.

So, can You add old version to this new KDE too, Please? Just simple icons to one simple desktop.

If you want icons on your desktop, right click on desktop -> Default Desktop Settings -> (if necessary, Unlock Widgets ->) change "Layout" to "Folder View".

Prefer a more lightweight simple desktop? There are several alternatives out there - XFCE, LXDE, and Razor-qt, just to name a few. You can still use KDE applications with those desktops (I know that with at least Razor-qt you can even use the KDE window manager, KWin).

Finally, if there's something you don't like, it's far more productive to ask if it's possible to get what you want rather than complaining that something is "useless". Also see KDE Code of Conduct (which is part of the forum rules).

Thank You Hans for Your comments !!

I think I have tried to "Unlock widgets", but just now I don´t remember. However, I still can´t get upper-right corner widget disappear.

This "change" => "Layout" => "folder view" is normal startup procedure. Like "chage" => "classic style" of KDE. However, if I try in folder view make programs as an icons/links to desktop, they are widgets, every one of them. And they are different sizes than folder view icons, and droppin over them. So, "auto arrange" doesn´t work.

I tried XFCE, witch first looks fine and small X-windows. But then, it start falling appart. Just couple changes to desktop settings, and it hangs. And never recovered. So, FDISK was healing method.

I´m not familiar with Razor-qt, I have to take a better look to it. My humble wish is to use X-windows I have used since it launched. I´m very fancy to it, and I like the way how it works... the old version.

What exactly are you trying to "send to desktop"? Are these application icons from the menu? If so - you may find it better to drag and drop them. Files and Folders should behave correctly.

I don't quite get the problem, can you please post a screenshot?

If you want to get rid of the Plasma Toolbox, which is generally discouraged, I recommend Stealth Cashew.
