Hello there,
I have install the KDE in my laptop (dell E4300) with ARCH linux distribution. After 2-3 hours of operation the bar at the bottom of my screen stacks. Also the "New Activity" button at the right top of the screen and the only way to be both back in operation is to push the power button and to select restart. I have use the strace tool in order to capture the error signaling(please see the attached file). Can someone help me please? Once it has stuck, is logging out sufficient to restore the system to correct operation?

Hi bcooksley,
Yes both reboot and logout->login again fix the problem. Any suggestion please? |

Do you have any 3rd party applets installed in Plasma, particularly network related ones?

Hi again,
The applets that I have installed are the Weather Forecast by Shawn Starr and the Gmail plasmoid by Mark McCans. |

It is possible to restart plasma without logging out, using one of the following commands:
kquitapp plasma-desktop killall plasma-desktop && plasma-desktop (prefer the first if it works). You can run that in krunner, or in a terminal, konsole or yaquake for example. A question springs to mind - does your panel also get stuck if you remove your plasmoids mentioned above? |

Note that it may take a few moments (around 10 seconds maximum usually) for Plasma Desktop to finish exiting. Killing plasma-desktop is not recommended as it may damage your configuration file - and should only be done when plasma-desktop is completely hung (ie. not responsive to kquitapp plasma-desktop).
Please definitely try removing those applet to see if it solves the issue. A network related hang is quite probable if the applet is not handling network access properly.

Finally after I removed the Gmail plasmoid by Mark McCans the problem solved.
Thanks for the answers and your time. Have you all a nice weekend |

I would suggest reporting this to the Gmail applet developers, which are likely to be found on kde-apps.org.
This will allow the applet developers to investigate and fix this, which may aid others facing this issue as well.
