Yesterday I performed an update from Fedora 16 to Fedora 17.
After that everything runs smoothly (including login in graphical environment), until I get a black screen at startup of "KDE Plasma Workspace". In GNOME and 'KDE Plasma Workspace failsafe', I haven't a black screen. The version of KDE is 4.9. This is what I have already undertaken to solve the problem after google searching, but without success.
create new fresh dummy user and login with that user. reinstall all KDE related software : $> yum reinstall kde* mv $HOME/.kde.share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc $HOME/.kde.share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc-broken add a new file in /etc/sysconfig/desktop with one line : DISPLAYMANAGER=KDE and mush more => but all without success ! Here is the file '.xsession-errors', but I have not enough skills to read the solution in this file:
I will appreciate your help. Thanks.

did you upgrade your graphics drivers when you upgraded your system?
note: when pasting so much code either place the text on pastebin.com (or similar) and link to it or use the code tags
note: I applied the code tags to your post |

In previous releases, I paid no attention to my graphical drivers.
I will again go to google search or have you any suggestion? |

normally your graphics drivers would be updated when your distro is, and frequently this type of proble is the drivers
what gpu and driver is currently installed?
found this http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=284321

@ google01103
thanks for your help. It seems that I work with NVIDIA drivers (nouveau) that do not support everything. But the problem is still not resolved. This is the output of 'glxinfo | grep OpenGL' :
I haven't RPM packages which the name "catalyst" in their description. Thanks. |

gotta to apologize - I had misread your 1st post, thought all desktops black not just KDE - I don't always read well
when you try loggin in and get the black screen try disabling composting with ctrl+shift+F12 I would suggest: posting on fedoraforum.org the catalyst post I referred to was for ATI cards, I posted it as it was similar issue to yours and didn't yet know your gpu |

result on black screen for alt+F2: they appears no krunner.
result on black screen for ctrl+shift+F1: nothing happens. When I press the keys ctrl+esc (System Activity) on black screen: just a shiny box with the three buttons (minimize, restore, close) and the title appears. inside remains black . Thanks anyway, I will also post on fedoraforum. |

sorry again (not my day), that was supposed to be alt+shift+F12 which would disable composting

OK alt+shift+F12 and my screen is filled with a beautiful painting and my familiar icons. Strange that It took me more then 12 years to learn something about that 'compositing'. But never too late.
I'm beginning to understand: because the system does not detect that OpenGl gives problems, there is no automatic fallback to XRender, as described here: http://userbase.kde.org/Desktop_Effects_Performance#Compositing_type. I can live with the <alt+shift+F12> workaround, probably I will find the parameter to disable OpenGL. Let me know if you advise me to create a bug report (for Fedora?) or have additional advice. Otherwise I close this issue. Many thanks. |

good, it's a Kwin and composting problem and you should start a new thread in the Kwin section
I'm not real knowledgeable on the rendering stuff but if it worked before the upgrade then there's something amiss if XRender is the solution (and I'm not sure it is, if it worked in F16) you can set it in systemsettings -> desktop effects -> advanced ->composting type you can try renaming /etc/X11/xorg.conf (should not be needed any more) and restart the pc |

Strangely enough I stay in a black screen during the startup of KDE, even after changing the compisite type to XRender as suggested. And also here ctrl+shift+F12 is the solution.
What you mean with: start a new thread in KWin section? KDE is started from KDM and I see no way to change this in KDM, but I'm certainly not the guru of KDM. You're right: if it worked in F16 then something went wrong during the update. For now I give up the search. Probably I will seek more deeply in the coming days. Many thanks. |

this is posted in the plasma forum, composting is a kwin function - I'm guessing you problem is kwin not plasma
