You can find the process ID out in System Activity, which is accessible from KRunner.

Just as a last question - is it correct that your audio issues with regards to playback are now fixed?

It doesn't appear to be crashing. And as far as I can tell the audio issues are fixed.

Horrible bug fixing technique, but I ended up updating to KDE 4.10 and all seems well.

I've now marked this as solved.
The issue of KMix disappearing and reappearing was likely a bug which was fixed in KDE 4.10.
