Hi.
Sorry for my english... I'm using Fedora 18 686 and KDE Plasma 4.9.5. Last time I updated Fedora KDE started in a black screen. I can see the mouse and the window for Alt+Tab (when I press Alt+Tab). Also the key combinations which I previously set for a few applications like Firefox, Opera, Krusader work... That's how I saw that KDE version is now 4.10.1. In that Fedora update list there were a lot of "kde*" updates. Also there were a few "kernel*" but they are not the cause (I unchecked them before updating but no change). I have a preupdate backup which starts fine so it's not such a big problem (for now) but still I want to know what's wrong and how to fix it - because not fixing = giving up to Fedora updates which in long run is no good... Thank you for any help. Regards, Cosmin |

try turning off composting alt+shift+F12
did your graphics drivers get upgraded when upgrading Fedora? what's you graphics setup?

Thank you.
Turning off composting with alt+shift+F12 doesn't help. I have a NVidia video card and I have installed the NVidia drivers (some time ago). But it doesn't seem to be the usual problem of those drivers (KDE freezing at startup). Instead I see KDE loading fine and, just in the moment in which it should gradually switch to desktop it gradually goes into black. Here is the updates list:
It's quite long because the backup was made a few weeks ago. I don't see a NVidia driver in this list. I unchecked the Intel video driver (xorg-x11-drv-intel.i686) but no change.

when posting a long list please use code tags
did you update the Nvidia drivers ? they need to be compiled against the Kernel being used |

Sorry, I used [quote]. It's fixed now.
First time I updated Fedora I tried with the kernel update also. Next times I tried without it. No change. So if I didn't changed the kernel, the video driver doesn't need an update... Anyway the NVidia drivers are installed with akmod so I don't have to do anything manually. I have done dozens of these automatic updates... For example now I am in the KDE after update, even if I don't have desktop, I can see the mouse and the applications (Krusader, Opera, Firefox and so on) are running fine. Would that be possible without the video driver...? But if you think I should update the driver please show me how... |

in a virtual terminal (alt+ctrl+F1) with no kde session running try renaming kwinrc ~/.kde[4]/share/config/kwinrc and then start KDE, maybe resetting kwin to defaults will help

Done that, I don't see any change...

can you create a new user to test
if the new user works then: 1) reset plasma to defaults, we'll be backing them up so they can be restored
2) rename ~/.kde[4] and restart kde which is obviously extreme |

Yes, with a new user KDE starts fine.
With the old user when I try "kquitapp plasma-desktop" in console it says: kquitapp(2832): "Application plasma-desktop could not be found using service org.kde.plasma-desktop and path /MainApplication." Strange... When I tried to rename ~/.kde it started fine also (with the default configuration, of course). |

was the kquitapp error run in virtual kconsole?
- If so my bad as plasma-desktop runs only in a session, just run the mkdir and mv lines - if run in a KDE session then plasma-desktop not started, try starting it manually wif alt+F2 if krunner works |

It was in a KDE session.
I tried to start plasma-desktop in krunner, it didn't start. I tried in a normal konsole (started with F2 in Krusader). It shows this:
I tried those 2 commands in a virtual konsole, I had to create a plasma-desktop folder in $HOME/plasma-config. Anyway, it moved the config files and now KDE starts fine but with the default configuration. Seems that what it's wrong is in those files. plasma-desktop-appletsrc:
plasma-desktoprc:
Later edit: Seems like "plasma-desktop-appletsrc" is the problem. The moment I copied this file back, KDE started again with a black screen. But I don't know which 4.9.5 settings are incompatible with 4.10.1 (since I'm not an expert in KDE). Could you please help me find...? Thank you. |

In this case, Plasma Desktop is definitely crashing.
Are you able to run "plasma-desktop" with your original configuration files from 4.9.5 and see where it is crashing? The output may be helpful in this instance.

Sure, I will do that. But, like I said, I'm no expert so could you please tell me how to do that..? Thank you.

First, restore your original configuration files. When you login normally, you should have a black screen.
This is the failure of Plasma Desktop to startup. Next, open Konsole and run "plasma-desktop". In this instance, it will either succeed (and you will get a desktop) or it will fail, likely with a message such as "plasma-desktop crashing.." or similar. If this occurs, please pastebin the output you got from the command, and post a link to the pastebin here.
