Hello :)
There are 32 little questions concerning KDE 4. If you can only answer some or even only one question, I would also be very grateful. Every little step is a good step. Most of them might not look like a real question, but they are at least problems I need to solve. All of these questions came up after switching from KDE3 to KDE4, so the functionality expected was given in KDE3 Please excuse my english, I hope we understand each other. System: Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) KDE: Version 4.9.95 Thank you very much for any help! ============================= 1) The key ^ on my keyboard does not work any more (german keyboard) 2) Using "gwenview" I can click folders, but I cannot type in a location like /home/me/foo/bar/ 3) The screen of my laptop dims (darkens) after a few minutes of inactivity, even when the plug is plugged in. 4) When a program (e.g. firefox) is "always on top", then it is also on top of the alt+f2 krunner window so that krunner hides behind the window (e.g. firefox) which is "always on top". 5) On the front of my laptop is a little wheel to increase / decrease the sound output level. KDE shows me a little bar which makes be believe that the sound level changes, but it does actually not affect the sound level, so music, videos, and so on are still at the same sound level. As I can see in the mixer, this wheel only seems to adjust the wrong device. 6) kwrite/kate: When double-clicking a file in the "save as" window, I get _no_offer_ like "File exists, do you want to overwrite it?" 7) kwrite/kate: When clicking on an existing file in the "save window" in order to click "save", I get an offer like "File exists, do you want to overwrite it?". But: "Cancel" is preselected, not "overwrite". In KDE3, "overwrite" has been preselected, so hitting "ENTER" was enough to overwrite the file. Now, hitting ENTER means "Cancel" 8) kwrite/kate: tabs are interpreted as spaces... I'd need real tabs, no spaces... 9) kwrite: How to turn off autocompletion permanently? (when disabling autocompletion, it is turned on again after restarting kwrite) 10) When unmounting USB sticks in KDE4, everything works fine. Unmounting my external harddrive results in the following error: "Could not unmount the following device: Elements One or more files on this device are open within an application" Fact: The harddrive is not in use (and I am sure about this) 11) The name of inactive windows is blurred - how can I make it not be blurred? 12) minimized windows (e.g. some gimp windows) disappear in the task bar 13) kde4 does not really inform me in a good visible way when the battery is near empty 14) KDE3 had a tray icon next to the clock to change the screen resolution. Where is this tray icon in KDE4? 15) kwrite automatically intends in some cases when programming and in a for() or while() or whatever - how to disable this "feature" permanently? 16) How to "emulate 3rd mouse button" by clicking the left and the right mouse button at the same time? (only the middle button works fine for pasting) 17) I need to hit the ~ key twice to get this char 18) the key for the char ` in the other direction (from right to left) does not work any more (but ` works which is on the same key when using SHIFT) 19) kwrite: how to force kwrite to permanently make use of the "dynamic word wrap" (also after starting kwrite from new) 20) when searching a word in kwrite, it shows up like beeing selected (yellow), but actually it is NOT selected, since you cannot overwrite it by just typing something after the search phrase has been found and marked. So after finding the word using the search function in kwrite, I always have to select the found word manually in order to overwrite it. 21) Firefox: CTRL+T (for a new tab) only works when the cursor is in the address bar 22) kwrite: how to make the search window in kwrite float and give a popup window when the find or replace command reached the end of the file? 23) dolphin always starts after logging in (it should not) 24) kwrite / kate: why doesn't the "Open file" window automatically opens the location from which a file has been opened the very last time? It always shows me my "Documents" directory 25) audacious: After setting the "Classic Interface" -> Where can I find the old audacious theme which looked like xmms? At the moment, there is only a very black theme available. 26) kwrite: The right click menu has got no undo/redo 27) How can I get rid of the "thing" with the word "Desktop" in it which is located at the very top, right corner of my desktop? I mean the thing, that offers me things like Add Panel, Add Widgets, Activities, .... when clicking on it. 28) How to make krunner (ALT+F2) execute a command in the shell? 29) How to make krunner (ALT+F2) execute a command as a different user? 30) filezilla starts without any problems when running from the "konsole", but NOTHING (without any message) happens when running "filezilla" from the ALT+F2 krunner window (filezilla just does not start) 31) krunner minimizes when clicking on the desktop... it should be ALWAYS on the VERY TOP of the screen. 32) krunner vanishes when pressing ALT+F2 again when it is already running. This is dangerous for me, because I sometimes use it to type in a phone number or a quick note when I am on the phone and got nothing to write and no time to open a program. ============================= Thank you very much for any help! Sincerly, Yours Sebastian Müller |

You can change this in System Settings -> Power Management
You can configure these in Kate/Kwrite settings in editing and appearance sections. Explore all the settings, you'll almost certainly find what you need to configure.
its working for me here.
This is most probably because you shut down without closing dolphin, and your settings is to restore previous session. (try changing system settings -> startup and shutdown -> session management to 'start with empty session'). If not, see if you have dolphin added as a startup program (search for autostart program) Some of your other points are really KDE defaults, and I do not think you'll be able to change them much. However, more experience users wil have to confirm that :) |

Have you tried using "xev" to see what the system thinks this key now represents? It is probable your system does not have the appropriate keyboard layout configured.
If you hover beside the right most breadcrumb item, then a "|" character should show up beside it. If you now click the breadcrumb bar it should convert to a bar where a path can be entered in. Unfortunately you will need to browse to a path first before you can do this however.
This is controlled by your Power Management settings in System Settings > Power Management.
This behaviour comes from KWin, which is responsible for window management. I'm not sure if it is intended behaviour or a bug however. I would suggest opening a new topic in the KWin forum - which the KWin developers monitor more closely. They may be able to give you a workaround or a explain the issue better.
If you right click on the KMix (volume mixer) icon in the system tray > "Select Master Channel" you should be able to select the main audio device. The exact appearance of this will differ depending on if your system is using ALSA or Pulseaudio however.
Interesting, I was not able to reproduce this. I use single click to select on my system, and when I pressed save I was hit with a prompt saying "A file named "test2" already exists. Are you sure you want to overwrite it?". This could possibly be a bug between single/double clicking...
This is intended behaviour, to protect user data from accidental overwrite.
Open KWrite > Settings > Configure Editor > Editor > Indentation. Make sure either "Tabulators" or "Tabulators and Spaces" is selected. Please note that if you select "Tabulators and Spaces" then the tab key will insert spaces equal to the value of "Indentation width" until it has made up a sufficient number of spaces to meet "Tab width" at which point it will convert the spaces into a tab character.
Unchecking "Enable auto completion" and "Auto Word Correction" in KWrite > Settings > Configure Editor > Editing > Auto Completion should do the trick. Is this setting not persisting between restarts of KWrite? (ie. if you open a different document in the same instance, the setting is retained).
This sounds like a Nepomuk indexing issue. Please see http://userbase.kde.org/Nepomuk/RemovableMediaHandling for tips which may help you here. Also note that KDE 4.9.95 is a KDE 4.10 pre-release, I advise updating to the final KDE 4.10 release (preferrably the 4.10.1 patch release) if possible.
Is this in the window decoration, or in the task manager (in the panel)?
Right click on any area of the Task Manager > Task Manager Settings > General. Make sure all four filters are disabled as a first test, then enable those filters you think will be appropriate. The minimized windows could very well be seen as being part of another activity, virtual desktop or a different screen.
You should have a battery applet in your system tray, and Power Management should give you a warning when your battery drops below specified power levels. You can configure the power levels at which the battery is deemed to be "low" and "critically low" at System Settings > Power Management > Advanced Settings.
This is usually provided by krandrtray. However you are running Kubuntu, and I believe they have recently started shipping KScreen, which is a much newer, modern replacement to krandrtray. If available, you should use KScreen instead as it should handle a wider range of use cases more efficiently. In this instance you will need to add a applet to your system tray (which can be done from the "Display" section of the System Tray settings).
Try changing the "Default indentation mode" in KWrite > Settings > Configure Editor > Editor > Indentation.
I am guessing that your mouse does not have a 3rd button at all here. Unfortunately KDE does not have any configuration options in regard to this, however you can likely find a guide on the internet which will guide you in adjusting the appropriate Xorg configuration files to enable this.
Please use the same debugging technique as for #1 with "xev" and see if the ~ is actually being seen by the system.
Please see above. I am suspecting keyboard layout issues for all three issues.
KWrite should be retaining it's settings. If it is not, then I suggest verifying it is under a new user (just to ensure that your user account profile does not have some legacy files causing issues). If you can verify it, I would suggest reporting it as a bug at bugs.kde.org.
You will probably have to file a feature request here I am afraid.
This is likely a focus issue, especially if the site is using Flash (which is a separate application, so therefore Firefox never sees the Ctrl + T event).
To the best of my knowledge, this is not possible unfortunately.
Before logging out, please make sure all Dolphin windows have been closed. After doing that, make sure no "dolphin" processes are still running in System Activity (which can be accessed via KRunner or the shortcut Ctrl + Esc).
You would need to ask the developers here. I suspect this is a matter of history simply not being supported. I do know that if a file is currently open KWrite/Kate will start from the location where that file is located.
Can't comment on this one i'm afraid. I'd recommend checking your distributor package manager (Muon if i'm not wrong) or consulting the Audacious support mechanisms.
Confirmed. At least on my system however, Undo and Redo are both present in the toolbar, and respond to the shortcuts Ctrl + Z and Ctrl + Shift + Z respectively.
This is the Cashew. It cannot be removed as it is the central gateway to configuring the Plasma Desktop.
Open KRunner configuration and make sure the "Command Line" plugin is enabled.
Once you have the Command Line plugin enabled, certain entries will have a spanner on their entry in the results list. Clicking this will present you with options to run the command in a terminal window, as well as a different user.
Please examine ~/.xsession-errors during the attempt to start Filezilla. It could be that the Filezilla menu entry is damaged, or incorrectly configured.
This is default behaviour I believe as KRunner always hides itself when it loses focus.
To the best of my knowledge, this is intended behaviour to allow you to quickly dismiss KRunner if you accidentally invoke it. I would suggest using the Notes applet for such notes. You should be able to place one on your panel, which should slide out when clicked (or invoked via it's shortcut key).

Dear bcooksley,
thank you very much for your reply! Please excuse that it took me some days to write back, but I needed to test out all the things you told me, and I also found some new ways. 1) xev seems to give out the correct characters. ^ gives out: KeyRelease event, serial 40, synthetic NO, window 0x9800001, root 0x153, subw 0x0, time 22957584, (59,-10), root:(1272,17), state 0x0, keycode 49 (keysym 0xfe52, dead_circumflex), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (5e) "^" XFilterEvent returns: False ´ gives out: KeyPress event, serial 40, synthetic NO, window 0x9800001, root 0x153, subw 0x0, time 22958402, (59,-10), root:(1272,17), state 0x0, keycode 21 (keysym 0xfe51, dead_acute), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 2 bytes: (c2 b4) "´" XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes: XFilterEvent returns: True ` gives out: KeyPress event, serial 40, synthetic NO, window 0x9800001, root 0x153, subw 0x0, time 22959046, (59,-10), root:(1272,17), state 0x1, keycode 21 (keysym 0xfe50, dead_grave), same_screen YES, XLookupString gives 1 bytes: (60) "`" XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes: XFilterEvent returns: True In the meantime I changed this: System Settings -> Input devices -> Keyboard -> Hardware -> Keyboard model From "Generic | Generic 101-key PC" to "Generic | Generic 105-key (Intl) PC" The characters missing still do not work. What can I do next? 2) I solved that by creating a command that opens gwenview with a path, like: "gwenview /home/me/" 3) solved, thank you! 4) A "window rule" with "Arrangement & Access -> [x] Keep above -> [Force] -> (x) Yes" helped a little, now krunner does not hide behind "normal" windows any more, anyway, it still hides behind windows with the setting "Always on top" I will write a new posting in the kwin forum. (if you or somebody else has no idea) 5) solved, thank you! 6) yes, as you said, after clicking the "save" button it works. In kde3, I only needed to double click the file I wanted to overwrite (in the save window) in order to get the dialog window asking me to overwrite the file. Now, in kde4, I need to click the "save" button first. Question: Can't this behavior be changed, so that kde4 asks me to overwrite the file in the moment I double-click a file in the save-dialog-window? 7) I see, but I really dislike this behavior. It was different in KDE3. Can't it be changed? solved, thank you! 9) solved, thank you! 10) solved, thank you! 11) You asked me: "where". Answer: In the window decoration. Do you know a solution? 12) No filters are active, it might be a bug specially with Gimp and KDE4... any ideas? 13) solved - I changed the brightness to 20% when the battery is empty, so I will see it... 14) I could find krandrtray, but there was no kscreen... what package is "kscreen" beeing shipped with? 15) solved, thank you! 16) there is no xorg configuration file in kubuntu 12.10 any more. I was also not able to create one, since the xorg.conf seems to be obsolete here. what is the correct way to solve it on kubuntu 12.10 ? 17) see 1) 18) see 1) 19) solved, thank you 20) I found out, that "kmail" (kde4) exactly has the "search and replace" dialog window I would also like to get in kwrite. The kmail "search and replace" window really looks like the "search and replace" window in kde3 times... why does kmail (in kde4) use this good "search and replace" window, and kwrite only got a simple "search and replace bar" ? How can I use kmail's "search and replace" window in kwrite? 21) bug not reproducible any more, might be solved... 22) see 20) 23) no clue why, it does not start any more. 24) where can I get in direct contact to the kwrite developers? 25) solved 26) Ok, the toolbar got an "Undo" and "Redo" button, but it is a question of workflow. Is there no way to edit the entries of the right-click-menu? 27) accepted... 28) + 29) okay, thank you!! 30) also no clue why, works since today 31) + 32) I will ask that in the kwin forum bcooksley, thank you very, very much for your help! I also thank the user "sdh" by the way! Yours sincerly Sebastian |

For the keyboard layout, it sounds like you want the "nodeadkeys" variant of the german layout. To quickly check, you can type
To always use this variant, go to System settings -> Input devices -> Keyboard and set the variant of the "de" map to "German (eliminiate dead keys)". Cheers

Dear scummos,
thank you very much for your reply! Actually I could find this: System Settings -> Input Devices -> Keyboard -> Hardware -> Keyboard model: [DROPDOWN LIST] If this is what you are talking about, there is no "German (eliminiate dead keys)" I could however not find something called "variant" in there. The command: setxkbmap -layout de nodeadkeys worked perfect for me - thank you very much!! ) Do you know if I can tell my whole system (kubuntu 12.10) to always use this layout? If I only change it in KDE's system settings, "vim" in the tty's will not be able to write ^ ` and ´ then Thank you very much for your help! |

Hi Sebastian,
there should be a "Layouts" tab, the "Hardware" tab is not what you want -- look here: http://i.imgur.com/jGfB7M9.png Greetings, Sven

I have identical results for ^, but quite a different one for `.
Note that XmbLookupString returned a result, and XFilterEvent is False rather than True. I would suggest checking your keyboard layout here, as well as for any .Xmodmap files or similar.
This is a behaviour which could have come from changes in either Qt or KDE itself. KDE applications themselves have little effect upon this policy as it is decided by common code. I had a quick check of the code, and it appears that it does not have any support for acting on double or single clicks as "select and accept" events - only select. In many parts, it is just forwarding calls down to Qt. I would suggest filing a request against kdelibs here.
I doubt a request to change it would be accepted as it creates too much risk of user data loss i'm afraid. The current code is very much hard wired to prefer the safe option of "Cancel" versus the dangerous option of "Overwrite".
I'm not sure if it is possible, but you may want to try tweaking the settings available for the Oxygen Window Decoration in "oxygen-settings".
Unusual. Do the windows still show up in Alt + Tab?
You would have to ask the Kubuntu people I am afraid. I would not be surprised if it is packaged under another name, or only available in the next version of Kubuntu.
There are usually still parts of a Xorg configuration in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ which deal with devices such as Wacom tablets, etc. I would suggest looking here, and possibly adding your own file to alter the configuration.
This is something which requires invasive changes in the code to support. KMail likely still has the dialog as the KDE 4 version is a very bare port from KDE 3 with little changes.
The Kate developers can be contacted on the kwrite-devel@kde.org mailing list, however as Kate/KWrite uses many shared parts of KDE it is quite possible that other parts of KDE are at fault here.
I have now checked the code of Kate / KWrite - and it seems to support your request, courtesy of XMLGUI technology KDE uses. First, head to ~/.kde4/share/apps/ or ~/.kde/share/apps/ if that does not exist. In there, create a "katepart" folder, and then copy /usr/share/kde4/apps/katepart/katepartui.rc into that folder. Now open the newly copied katepartui.rc and find the following line:
After it, add the following 3 lines:
Then save and restart all open Kate instances - the entries should now appear (in theory). To do the same for KWrite, you need to repeat the above procedure, except for the katepartsimpleui.rc file instead.

This is my problem. With Pulseaudio, only one channel shows: Built-in Audio Analog Stereo, so I can't switch primarily to the PCM channel. In alsamixer, I can see the volume adjusts the useless Master channel before finally adjusting PCM. I usually uninstall Pulseaudio to gain more control. Does anyone know of another solution? PS—I used the amixer hack, e.g.:

In this case, uninstalling Pulseaudio (or simply disabling it via the correct options) is your only solution - when Pulseaudio is running it is not possible to bypass it.
