Does anyone know how to change the width of widgets that are stored in the panel? For example, I have my clock stored in the panel but it takes up nearly half the panel.
Just to be clear, I have learned how to resize widgets that are on the desktop. I am concerned with panel widgets. Also, once the width has been changed, is there a way to place them at any arbitrary location on the panel, or will they always automatically line up to the left side?

As for the width I reckon the only way to reduce the size of the clock is to decrease its font size.
To change position: click on the cashew, then on the widget you want to move and ... move it ![]() HTH

I will try that for the clock, but I think I am going to still have problems. For example, the width on the color picker and the system tray are also too large, and I don't see any way to change their width that is analogous to changing the font size. As for moving the widgets around, I can change their order but everything still wants to move as far to the left as possible. For example, I like to have my pager on the right side of the panel, and the only way I could position it there was to add the task bar, which took up all the space to the left of the pager. I hope all that is clear :-P

We may be getting there ![]() As for widget size - nope, afaics widgets get sized dynamically according to the task bar, so no cookie there. ![]() If you require help on how to install new widgets just ask.

I will try the Panel Spacer widget and let you know if that works. Thanks for the help!

I am asking for help on how to install new widgets :-P I know how to add them once they are installed, but the documentation for the panel spacer wasn't helpful for actually installing it.

Thanks, I was able to install from source (though when I tried to install the .deb file it did not show up in the widget list). I am trying to install another widget from source but I get the error message
Any ideas why that might be coming up? Or, did I miss a step when install from the .deb file?

I have heard of this mythical Panel Spacer widget several times now, but haven't the foggies clue as to how to install it. My problem is that the clock is always being truncated. No matter how many surrounding widgets I remove the clock's date is not all visible. Today's date, for example, shows as 0 Nov 200 which is less than useful. The only widget repository listed when I try to add is KDE Look, and spacer is not an option listed there....

@rlynch: do you have the appropriate *-devel packages installed? kdebase4-workspace-devel and kdelibs4-devel should sort the problem out ( Note: these are the OpenSuSE package names others will be different )

Anyhow, what about the panel widget width? I have my quicklauncher and the system tray together on my panel and the systray always uses half of the panel, regardless how many icons are on it. This sucks, because I can't put more icons on the quicklauncher, because they simply don't fit.
I would definitely rather have icons on the panel than the black background of the systray, am I foolish? |

The Quick Launcher should grow to accomodate more Icons. I believe a setting is available for this in its ( Quick Launcher ) Configuration.
It is not possible to manually adjust the positioning or size of widgets on the panel manually at this time, it is handled internally by Plasma.

I am getting this too - it has been a problem since 4.0.
If I add a clock, color picker, Task Manager etc widgets to a panel, they expand to a ridiculous width, with lots of blank space. I have tried to find this spacer widget - as someone else said - it seems a bit mythical. I notice the width is a particular problem with panels at the top of the screen. |

Well, when you're ready to upgrade to 4.3 there is one included by default. |

I had the problem with the clock showing at the wrong width. After fiddling with it, I found that changing the height caused the clock widget to resize. Once it was the correct width, I was able to reduce the height and it continued to stay the correct width. Hope that helps.
