Hi,
We are trying to install a virtual machine with minimal size and a colleague installed a minimal install of KDE4. In comparison to a full install the option to arrange items along a grid on the desktop is missing. In the full install I get this with right click. Also KDE seems to be unable to detect new items in the Desktop folder. It just ignores changes. Is there a way to install small packages (ubuntu) that provide this functionality and nothing more? Thanks! Best wishes Stefan |

if it's the desktop layout you're asking about then It's in plasma-containments-addons, you'll need to change the layout to folderview (cashew -> default desktop settings -> layout) OR are you looking for the folderview widget, then it would be plasma-widget-folderview. there's also a grid desktop layout that would also be in plasma-containments-addons
could you elaborate on "unable to detect new items" ... "it just ignores them" you mean on the desktop? in a widget or in Dolphin? |

Hm, cashew? Where do I find this? I always tried the KDE system settings for configuration. When I rightclick I get: - run command - add widget - add panel - activities while in the full installation I get: - create new - undo - paste clipboard - icons - refresh desktop - open with dolphin I am looking for the "icon" part.
In the full installation KDE recognizes when I put a .desktop file into the folder ~/Desktop. This is not the case in the reduced installation. I have to drag and drop files from the ~/Desktop folder onto the desktop to make them appear there. Thanks for the help! Best Stefan |

cashew the thingy on upper right corner of screen, you can also use right click the desktop -> default desktop settings OR alt+d, alt+s (when over the desktop)
the reason the 2 different right click results is that they are different desktop layouts, the default (desktop icons) and folderview (which is what you're wanting to use) |

also to have the desktop mirror ~/.desktop you need to use the folderview layout
