Per-screen activities

Wed Sep 04, 2013 6:03 pm
I've read in various articles that it's possible to have an activity per-screen, however I can't seem to make this work under KDE 4.10 on Fedora 17. I have two monitors that are correctly seen as separate screens. I can filter my window walker (alt-tab) to only switch windows on a screen. I have shortcuts set up to switch between each screen, however the problem remains that activities are basically like a large pain in the butt virtual desktop setup right now instead of a more useful organization of apps that I can switch to on any screen independently. Alternatively, I'd also be interested in a virtual desktop per-screen instead.

What setting controls this?

Not sure if it's possible anymore. It used to be the default behavior, but it changed some time ago. In my opinion it makes more sense that activities are "global" (it would be nice to have per-screen workspaces, though).

I honestly don't care if it's a virtual desktop per-screen or activity per-screen. But having the ability for each screen to act independently from each other is a big usability improvement. On my laptop or a system with only a single window it hardly matters of course.

Xmonad has ruined me I suppose. Might just have to switch back.

Well, you can always use XMonad with Plasma Desktop and other KDE applications. That's what I do. :)

Meh... I'd like something that offers the XMonad concept of desktops/workspaces, but with a window manager that is friendly to the applications I regularly use. If I'm only using chrome, the terminal, and emacs then by and large there is no trouble. But life isn't that simple. I also happen to think highly of KDE in general and expected the ability to configure this. Seems like I'm just going the wrong direction on the highway or something.

Well, this is only based on my knowledge, maybe someone else knows some other ways.
