Some, but not all apps hidden in the system are not functioning properly, if I make them visible they work fine

One or both mouse buttons are not functioning for some apps if they are hidden in the tray
note: tested with multiple users inc. a newly created one

not working properly:
- network management 0.9.3, no left but right works
- manage print jobs, no left but right works
- Opera, neither the left or right works
- HP systray, neither the left or right works

works fine:
- kwallet
- kaption
- Kalarm
- Konversation
- Klipper

posted a bug https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=327606

and found 2nd user experiencing the same with different distros https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=327579#c3
Option Start hidden to tray in Mozilla Firefox add-ons like FireTray and Minimize On Start And Close do not work (after system reboot the automatic started Firefox is not hidden to tray) and have the same problem; when Firefox is hidden to tray (manually reduced to icon) the left mouse button on the icon in the tray does not re-open the application. In order to have the add-on working the Start hidden to tray option must be unchecked. Tested on Kubuntu 13.10 ( KDE 4.11.2 & 4.11.3) and Chakra Linux (KDE 4.11.3).

Other than the Network Management applet, do the other three all use the legacy XEmbed based system tray by any chance?
I notice all those applications which work are KDE applications - and hence use the newer StatusNotifier system.

I noticed that too, but no idea about which technologies are used but pretty sure they all worked fine at one time, so it was either my upgrade to openSUSE 13.1 or my upgrade to KDE SC 11.3 with openSUSE 12.3.

per an observation by Wolfi323 on the openSUSE forum, clicking directly on the icon (not the adjacent text) and the apps/widgets work as expected

Okay. Can you try force hiding a SNI based system tray icon and see if clicking on it's name works? This sounds like a regression in the system tray applet.

As I mentioned in the bug report, for KDE4 applications using the newer StatusNotifier system, clicking on the name works fine.

An SNI based system tray icon is essentially any KDE 4 application - it is a reference to every application which uses the StatusNotifier specification to display it's system tray icon.

In any instance, all I can advise you at this point is to follow the above bug report - it seems this is a regression/bug in the System Tray applet as suspected.
