My ksplash gets corrupted so that after about 1 second, it does not cover the whole screen. I believe that it gets goofed as soon as the panel gets loaded. What I get instead is the splash covering the top part of the screen, with some weird overlap on the side (like if you were to select tiling instead of stretch for desktop background).

I logged in under my wife's profile, and this does NOT happen, so I know that there must be some configuration file messed up somewhere. Can someone point me in the right direction? I am leary to start removing random files to test it.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I found this link that seems to be related, but they did not come to a resolution. http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde&m=97833647426149&w=3

Have you tried reconfiguring the splash screen, as well as comparing the preferences between the two accounts? This can be done in System Settings > Workspace Appearance > Splash Screen.

Also, does the resolution of the screen change as part of startup under your account?

Well, I did change splash themes. And, yes, I have looked at both accounts, as I am the one that sets them up. Although, I really don't know what I would be looking for. Its just a list of splash screens, right? As for resolution change, I do not know. How would I figure this out? However, it would do the same for both accounts I assume. Her resolution is set as the same as mine after login.

Edit: For fun, I ran the "Test theme", and it of course works fine.

A screen resolution change should be fairly noticable, as the screen will flicker, and the position/appearance of elements on the screen will also likely change. If you are not observing either of those, then it is unlikely the screen resolution is changing.

One thing you could try is clearing /var/tmp/kdecache-$USER/ outside KDE to ensure outdated / corrupt caches are not causing the issue.
As you have attempted to change the splash screen, this rules out a corrupt configuration.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, this did not work. I am thinking that it must be something buried in my home folder. I guess I will start digging. Please let me know of any other suggestions.

Is there any particular difference in terms of applications running on startup, or applets you use in Plasma Desktop (particularly third party ones) between the two accounts?

One of these may be acting in a way which is causing the splash screen to misposition itself.
You could also try removing any/all splash screen configuration files from ~/.kde4/share/config. These will probably start with "ksplash".

I was hoping you were on to something with the applets, because I use lancelot and quick access and a weather applet, none of which are on my wife's desktop. I removed anything that is not standard, and nothing changed.

I previously tried removing the ksplash config files, but that didn't do anything. Darn and darn.

Does starting with a fresh Plasma Desktop configuration (plasma-desktoprc and plasma-desktop-appletsrc) have any effect?

Are there any difference in the applications running at startup?

Darnit. No, for both questions. One thing that I noticed when trying this just now is that the logout dialog is not centered on my screen. It is centered above the normal position, right about where the center shows on the corrupted ksplash. As you suggested previously, there must be something that thinks the resolution is different, even though it isn't.

edit: I took a screenshot, but i don't see anyway to add attachments.

:) Okay, I got it figured out (although I don't know why it works). The Nvidia settings were set to a specific resolution (1920*1080). I changed it to "auto". Even though the resolution did not change, this corrected the problem. bcooksley, thanks for helping me troubleshoot this. I probably would not have figured this out without your help.

Also, thanks for the image info google01103.

And thank you labatts, you saved me a couple of hours head scratching :)
Mine got messed up after I used Wine with an old W95 game, it switched my desktop to 640x480. After switching back to 1920x1080 ksplash and the logout dialog were offset to the top-left. (btw. I had to do the reverse: toggling auto in to 1920x1080 in nvidia-settings set things right again.)
