I have a program that manually changes aspects of the plasma workspace, and to get them to apply, I have to kill plasma-desktop and then restart it. This looks ugly, and seems to cause instability in my session until I reboot.

You shouldn't kill Plasma Desktop. To get it to exit gracefully, you can run the following command:
Code: Select all
kquitapp plasma-desktop

Please note that it is very common for Plasma Desktop to write out quite a bit of it's configuration again on exit, so I would suggest you ask Plasma Desktop to exit first, then perform the modifications and start it back up again.

Alternately, you could try using Javascript to script the changes you want to make - automating the activation of it using xte. This would eliminate the need to restart Plasma Desktop.
