Hi all,
I have updated Kubuntu yesterday to 14.04. It has not been a smooth update at all. Anyway, the latest problem at hand is this: I cannot logout from KDE anymore (not shutdown or reboot). I have found this topic: viewtopic.php?f=67&t=109603&start=15 but it does not give any solution (just: "it suddently works again"). When I click on any of the logout buttons, the menu disappears as if the command was accepted, but nothing happens whatsoever and the desktop continues to work as if nothing happened. I have tried the following: - running this from command line:
Returns a blank line and the prompt, no output at all, and nothing happens. - there is nothing in .xsession-errors - loginctl is correct I really don't know how to manage this. Update: I am going through all the rest of the posts about similar problems. - enabled debug with kdebugdialog, tried logging out then tailing ~/.xsession-errors : still empty - my hostname is correct (set to "pinguino") and it resolves to localhost - using lightdm as login manager (not for any particular reason) - there are no applications inhibiting logout (it is a fresh session), the problem persists across reboots Update 2: ok... so my answer is the same as the thread I mentioned before. It is working again. For no reason. After several reboots. Can't figure out what subtle change made the difference. Sorry about that. |

Yes, unfortunately this is a recurring problem. At this stage, we've never been able to identify the specific cause for why this happens - although it does seem to impact particular people or installations (I haven't seen it in a very long time).

Had this problem after upgrading to ubuntu + kubuntu 14.04 LTS.
I got the issue fixed removing .kde/share/config/ksmserverrc and restart lightdm Reference: https://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php?61623-How-I-got-this-fixed-gt-KDE-cannot-logout-shutdown-reboot-etc This also fixed issues with no sound due to no audio card listed in audio and video configuration |

This resolved the issue for me too. Thanks! |

Sounds as if some (minimized?) client silently inhibits logout.
-> You'll probably run into this again at some point. Do you still have the ksmserverrc? |

Sorry i'm answering to a late topic, but, i would say that the delete of .kde/share/config/ksmserverrc worked for me, and it also fixed many problems i had, (before removing, kmix didn't start with the system, and gparted cannot be started with the application bar.
thank you again |
