Corrupt Configuration

Fri Sep 26, 2014 8:36 pm
I've been noticing some strange issues with my KDE install lately, certain options not working and certain graphs missing from apps like ksysguard. I discovered that if I delete my .kde4 folder and log out and back in then things work as they should (however, with a default config obviously). So this seems to point to my issues being something wrong with my configuration. Is there anyway to repair the config rather than having to start from scratch and reconfigure my whole desktop (it's highly customized and would take me a few hours to get back up to where it is now)? Perhaps I can export my configuration and reimport it some way other than copy / pasting the corrupt .kde4 folder?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

are there a limited number of these issue apps? if so you could just remove their rc files and thus return those apps to the default config

did you recently perform an upgrade? if so from what to what?

So far I've only noticed issues in ksysguard for the most part. But the oddest thing I've noticed, and perhaps biggest issue, is that I cannot change my desktop icons size. If I go SystemSettings > Application Appearance > Icons > Advanced and select Desktop, there are no numbers in the pull down menu where I should be able to set the size. Not only that, but no menu even pops up if I click the pull down.

So I suppose I should remove ksysguard rc and X rc that would control the icon settings? Where would that config file be located?

Also, I installed the KDE5 frameworks a while ago

so are you running KDE 5 or 4? I thought normally you could only install & run one or the other unless the distro made special packaging arrangements so they could be installed & run in parallel

the icon issue is that with one or all of the icon themes? I don't think the size issue is a rc file but something else, could you see if this affects a different/new user?

It's arch so I can pretty much run anything (installed from the extra repo, not AUR). As far as the icons go, that pull down menu functions properly with the Oxygen theme, but none of the 3rd party themes that I've installed. So I guess that's a theme issue... bummer. There's no other way to change the icon size on the desktop? Perhaps manually editing a file? Doesn't really seem like something that would be impossible.

Also, to report back, I deleted the ksysguardrc file and it still doesn't see any of my CPUs when I open the CPU graph properties.

re cpu:
- it sees cpu usage in the process table but not the individual cpu's?
- do you have mpstat or other utility that displays individual cpu's (maybe Conky) and do they function properly?

re icons :
- the settings would be in ~/.kde[4]/share/config/kdeglobals in various icons sections, not sure editing will fix but you can try. I would reinstall the icon themes and maybe some core kde packages like libkde4, kdelibs4, kdebas4-workspace, kdebase4-runtime (these are my distro's naming)

did these issues occur after installing frameworks 5?

re re cpu:
They system monitor widget displays CPU usage just fine, so it seems to be just ksysguard. And yes, ksysugard shows cpu usage in the processes table, and lists an appropriate total at the bottom of the window; it's just that system load tab that's screwed up.

re re icons:
I'll give that a try.
EDIT: I installed some new themes from the "get themes" button in system settings and those and now the old themes have a proper drop down menu to change the desktop icons sizes. However, the icons don't change size lol actually, the Oxygen icons don't either. I think this may be a case of that drop down menu not doing what I think it does. I am using the folder desktop view.

I installed kde5 frameworks a while ago, and I'm 98% sure that everything was functioning properly after I installed kf5. This is something that's semi-recent (had created a forum post about it a few weeks ago, but we couldn't come up with a solution).

re cpu's: try reinstalling ksysguard

re icons: right click on desktop -> folder settings -> icons -> size, adjust the slider and click apply

Tried installing ksysguard (haven't tried purging it, may give that a go) with no success.

I guess, under closer insprection, that does change the icons size... I was under the impression that that just changed the grid spacing (due to it's placement right under the grid settings, and that's what the results looked like).

It'd be nice to have a finer adjustment (more like Mac OS), but hey that's a feature request haha.

re ksysguard: try using kdebugdialog by deselected all, then only selecting ksysguard restarting ksysguard and then checking the tail of ~/.xsession-errors for some thing relevant.

Nothing in xsessionerrors. Even launching ksysguard from a terminal window doesn't tell me anything.

try renaming ~/.kde[4]/share/apps/ksysguard/ see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=218796

can you test as a new/differnt user?

For KSysGuard 5.3.1 it was ~/.local/share/ksysguard that was needed to be deleted.
