To me it sounds like you accidentally removed the task manager, this normally takes all the space it can get and pushes all other widgets to the left. Could you provide a screenshot please? It should work as expected for a new user, or when you create a new default panel (right-click on an empty space on the desktop and choose "Add Panel"->"Default"), right?
