How to change the order of virtual desktops in KDE 4.14?
For example, there are currently 3 virtual desktops aligned vertically. How to make the 2nd highest virtual Desktop the highest Desktop ? |

ps - you use ctrl+F8 and/or set a screen edge to show the desktop grid |

Thank you but this does not answer the question as it was meant:
This video shows how to move the windows between desktops. Instead, how to move everything else, the desktop's background and its widgets. (The latter are particularly cumbersome to replicate.) |

you're correct you want to rearrange the order of existing desktops and the video does not answer that
did you try holding the ctrl key when dragging? I can't test as I don't have separate wallpaper & widgets |

Nope, even holding the Shift and Ctrl key while dragging does not get the desktop or any widget moving.
I realize that since by default all virtual desktops have the same background and widgets, this request might not be as common as it seemed to me at first. |

You're apparently using one activity per virtual desktop, so what you want to change is the assignment between activities and virtual desktops.
I don't know whether that's possible, though. |

Hmm...
There are two acitivities, each of them with three virtual desktops, each virtual desktop with independent widgets. It would be nice to know if the widgets move between the three virtual desktops of each activity. |

The plasma desktop does NOT support individual wallpapers or widgest per virtual desktop - only per activity.
If you seek to shuffle around these things, you seek to shuffle around activities. If you do NOT run the "one activity per VD" mode (some plasma-desktop setting), then what you want to do has nothing to do with virtual desktops. You then have n virtual desktops on m activities each. The virtual desktops contain different windows, but the desktop (and panels) are the same for each. |

Ok.
All I can say is that there are six virtual desktops with six différent Backgrounds and two activities on my installation of Opensuse 13.2. What would count as a proof ? |

Sorry for being somewhat OT. I read that and thought: But I have individual widgets on my virtual desktops (and only one activity). How does that square with what you said. Did I get something wrong?

Talking about Plasma 4 or Plasma 5?
For plasma 4 there was a feature to have individual wallpapers/widgets per virtual desktop and afair that simply bound virtual desktops to activities under the hood. In Plasma 5 "even" that's gone and you'll "only" get different with "real" activities. https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=341143 To check your activities list: qdbus org.kde.ActivityManager /ActivityManager/Activities ListActivities |

Am still on Plasma 4.

On OpenSUSE 13.2, KDE 4.14
qdbus org.kde.ActivityManager /ActivityManager/Activities ListActivities gives 8390277a-f1ea-4499-a700-84f2221d607d da4f5e7c-ab66-40a9-baeb-24edc0644570 Still, something like that was to be suspected: Every once in a while, stopping one activity and returning to it, all virtual desktops are suddenly equal to that of the other activity. Is this than a workaround implemented by openSUSE and not officially suported by KDE? |
