Few Plasma 5 problems

Tue Feb 10, 2015 12:00 pm
Hello,

I am facing some problems with plasma 5 and I do not know if they have already discussed here or not. I could not find the resolution anywhere and hence thought it would be best to share these :

1. The wireless network does not work when I login. kded5 does not ask for password. I have to login to gnome to start the wireless and come to plasma again when the kded5 pops-up.

2. The application launcher does not resize. (It might be a default design, in which case please ignore this )

3. The recent documents in application launcher are not really the recently accessed documents/applications.

4. The system-tray does not contain most of non-kde applications like skype, thunderbird etc. (I think this has already been discussed but not sure if this bug is fixed)

It will be great if anyone shares any update/fix for these.

Cheers,
Dhiraj

Also the "recent documents" is a huge privacy and security problem because obviously there is no configuration of that system whatsoever.

Any search (or autosearch) feature that is not configurable is completely useless at least in my opinion - how can a developer or sofware feature designer know the different needs of different users? They can't.

So adding "recent documents" without an obvious way to either completely disabling it (obvious as in "NO, you do not have to manually deny permissions to some hidden subfolder in your directory..." - which is a real clumsy workaround anyway a McGyver approach to a broken feature...)

Everytime software auto-gathers lists of user behaviour without giving the user a way to control WHICH information is gathered shows a deep misunderstanding of usability on the developers side. Maybe they do not care on their own system but many people do care which information is gathered and they have a right to control it. If KDE doe not care about that at least give a "switch it off" button.

BTW: The missing of configuration of "recent documents" alone is a reason why KDE can not be used in a corporate environment or basically any multiuser office. Noone there can control who is looking at their screen and there is enough mistrust, envy and competition to make malicious use out of only the glimpse of some coworkers list of shopping sites, youtube or priority of projects...

But whatever we will discuss here, nobody will change the behaviour of "recent documents", bugreports and feature requests are out there forever but as KDE decides to work they will be worked at...

It's sad, sad it is,

Hi dhiraj!

If you want to follow the "recent documents" work have a look here, apparantly it's an old component that nobody works at but is just there.... - the new way is supposed to go into activities but it's not implemented yet, well ....:

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=344575

You might want to vote for that (though I have no idea whether the voting system provides any incentive on working on it...)

thx for reading,
