Im using Debian 8 or Debian Jessie with KDE 4.14.2.
I cant use the latest version of KDE because I'm using Debian stable Jessie. The disc is a DVD video but for some reason when the available devices pops up, it says "DVD-ROM". I put in a burned disc with the same information and it says optical disc and it does the "open with file manager" pop up. I put in a "Kubuntu 12.04" live disc and put the same DVD video in my secondary dvd drive in a desktop with two DVD drives and it says optical disc and "open with file manager" pops up. I guess it's a bug with the Debian Jessie KDE. The same thing happens on a laptop with one DVD drive and Jessie KDE using the same dvd video. No "open with file manager" option. I've tried two other DVD videos and the same thing happens. I just put in a "Noah" dvd video and I get the "open with file manager" option but this is after open and closing the DVD drive a few times. I do notice that when I put in a DVD video that's been burned instead of being an original DVD video that you buy from a store, the burned DVD allows me to browse using dolphin. I put the other problem disc back in again, the "open with file manager" option appears on the list. Another thing that I notice is that the DVD video disc says "DVD-rom" when the action windows pop up. If it says "dvd-rom" there is no "open with file manager"option. If the DVD video says "optical" there is an "open withe file manager" option. I never had this issue with Wheezy or Debian 7. |

Have you installed https://wiki.debian.org/CDDVD#DVD ?

I reinstalled. I guess something that I installed the first time after doing the main install, caused the problem. (I guess). I'm ok now. Thanks for responding! |

I'm having this issue again. I reinstalled Debian 8 to fix this but I'd like to know how to fix it without reinstalling Debian 8. Libdvdread4 is already installed.
Here is more info. I can insert an ISO DVD and it says "Optical Disc" and "Open with File Manager" is on the list. I can insert a burned DVD movie and it says "Optical Disc" and "Open with File Manager" is on the list. I put in a "Kubuntu 12.04" live disc and put the same DVD video in my secondary dvd drive and it says optical disc and "open with file manager" pops up. I can insert an original DVD movie/video that I bought from the store and it says "DVD-ROM" and "Open with File Manager" is not on the list. I guess it's a bug with the Jessie KDE. The same thing happens on a laptop with Jessie KDE, one dvd drive and the same dvd video. No "open with file manager" option. I've tried two other DVD videos and the same thing happens. I do notice that when I put in a DVD video that's been burned instead of being an original DVD video that you buy from a store, the burned DVD allows me to browse using dolphin. If it says "dvd-rom" there is no "open with file manager"option. If the DVD video says "optical" there is an "open withe file manager" option. I never had this particular issue with Wheezy. Since I'm in Debian stable, I can't always have the latest version of KDE. |

You'll also require libdvdcss2 in order to playback or read CSS "protected" DvDs.

I have libdvdcss2 but for some reason I can't always view DVDs using Dolphin. I can play DVDs without any issues but just can't always view the folder using Dolphin. Burned DVDs I don't have this issue just store bought DVDs show "DVD-ROM" when using Dolphin while burned DVDs showed "Optical Disc". Oh well, at least I can play them. Thanks for responding. |

this is controlled by the solid-actions kcm, run:
However, unless you customized those before this means the disc is not detected to be a storage volume or it's usage flag isn't set as FileSystem. Both more or less means "this disk has no filesystem" and that's an issue with libdvdread - but since you say you can play CSS protected discs, it would rather point some weird udev... => please check what your DvD device is (usually /dev/sr0) and post the output of
(where you'd replace sr0 by the actual device node) PS: maybe don't use a porn disc for this |

Trying this now.

I can assure you that it's not a problem in kde or libsolid - the udev backend lacks fields like eg:
Can you access the (video?) dvd from those drives at all (on linux or windows) ie. play it with xine or mplayer (or some windows software DvD player)? Could be that the disc is rejected (by the drive/s) for having a wrong region code? I get the above even w/o libdvdcss (but of course appropriate libdvdread) |

I can play the DVD using VLC on the same desktop in Debian. The same thing happened on a Dell laptop with KDE and Debian 8. I just reinstalled again. Thanks for responding. I guess at least I can play DVDs. Maybe its some program being installed thats causing this hiccup.

No, it's either the disc, the drive or a bug in udev (which is presently maintained under systemd, but I don't know how this impacts debian)
Since you tested different drives and (likely?) several discs, the problem will be (in the debian fork of?) udev. |

Lue,
Thanks again for responding. I just found out that Plasma 5 doesn't have screensavers. So, I can live with this bug. I'd rather have nice opengl screensavers. |
|
Strictly spoken. nothing has "screensavers" since there's nothing to save (nor are they used for that
"Screensavers" are however just fancy animation programs and reside in /usr/lib/xscreensaver/ - you can invoke them at any time to entertain you, no reason to abuse the screenlocking mechanism.

You know I saw a post about using xscreensavers for Plasma 5.
Hee hee. Thanks again for responding! |
