Cannot update applications

Thu Jul 09, 2015 8:51 pm
Hello,
I am running KDE 4.10 on Centos 7. A few months ago, I found I was unable to edit the Kickoff Application launcher. I can get the KDE Menu Editor, but whenever I try to save I get a little dialog box that says, "Updating system configuration." and the progress bar goes from 0% to 100% and back to 0% endlessly.

Is this a known issue? Alternatively, is there somewhere I can edit some files that will enable me to modify the menu under the sheets?

Thanks.

Yes, and a long standing one too:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=166792
(although the bug has been filed against KDE 4.0.98, I had this problem years before in KDE3 already...)

But don't worry. The menu editor works fine, and saves the configuration correctly.
The problem is just that triggering the "System configuration cache" update doesn't work reliably (on some systems at least), so applications also won't get notified of the change.

Just abort that and call "kbuildsycoca4" manually, or probably logout/login will help too.
Updating to 4.13 or higher might help too, that improved the situation for me considerably.

Thanks for the succinct and helpful reply.

Actually the menu editor did not work for me. My changes were not saved. But, as you mentioned, a restart corrected the issue. I needed to reboot for a memory install, and when the system came up I was able to edit my menus with no trouble. So if this comes up again I will just reboot.
