Navigate through icons in task manager

The task manager in the panel gives a certain order to the windows. Depending on the size of the panel and other settings, the icons are ordered in a row or in a grid. The icon corresponding to the current window is highlighted. Is there a way to say: "please switch to the window that has its icon right/left/above/below the current one"? This would be similar to switching through tabs in a browser. Of course I can click on the respective icon, but I'm looking for a keybord shortcut. The many options in the task switcher do not cover that, as far as I see. Where else could I look?

Another helpful feature would be if, when using the task switcher, the icon of the to-be-selected window would be highlighted in the task manager in the panel. Because that (the panel) is where I usually look to see what windows have I got. Again, the task switcher offers many alternatives (flip switch, cover switch, ...) but none seems to couple with the task manager in the panel. So, first I'm orienting myself by looking at the task manager in the panel, but when I actually switch, windows are presented in a totally different way and different order. I find this confusing, unfortunately.

Thanks a lot.
