Hide widgets in desktop view and vice versa

Earlier, I could put widgets on a desktop and they were visible ONLY when I pressed a hot key.

Now, I can not do that. How do I achieve that?

If by "earlier" you mean "KDE 4": https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=344180
Afaiu the dashboard is supposed to be removed totally.
