Hello,
some weeks ago I installed Kubuntu 15.10 which I loved right away. However, I had to fight several issues with the system: 1. The system time was set correctly, but because of an issue with the widget on the desktop, the clock there was running one hour ahead. 2. System Tray Icons appeared and disappeared completely randomly, sometimes hiding important information like selected input language, sound volume or WiFi Level or if you are connected. 3. After boot up, when the login screen appears, the screen gets all buggy and pixeled so you cannot see anything. 4. The Windows of the screen sometimes flicker and change, etc. 5. After shutting down the machine there is a good chance that it will boot up in an unrecoverable black screen. I have hence decided to add the Ubuntu Backports and I got updated to KDE 5. Now this fixed issue 1 and issue 2 completely. Issue 3 I got resolved by adding "nomodeset" to grub boot loader. Issue 4 now is pretty much gone as well and it works fine. However, now there are three things that remain / showed up: 1. The black screen after logging in from a rebooted or shut down machine remains. All attempts, suggestions and fixes have failed. Only thing that worked was a reinstall. 2. KDE Plasma Desktop after the update keeps crashing A LOT... pretty much every time or every second time I click another window, select something in the task bar or system tray, etc. causes Plasma to crash and to restart. Well, while it is not critical, it still is annoying big times. 3. Login to gmail accounts from telepathy did only work randomly (which I use for work, so its important) Hence, 15.10 was unusable for me. The default install with all its issues and error didnt't work and while the update fixed most of the issues (in fact I could probably even live with the crashes for some time until they are fixed), the black screen that is possibly coming up after a reboot or shutdown is indeed annoying. I use the laptop as a business laptop... Each time I spent 8h setting it up (KDE offers LOADS of flexibility in customization as you know, which is also why I chose and love it.) just to have to delete the system after a week or two when it is most fun and - even more painful - has lots of downloads, logs, documents, and other stuff stored on it. The only solution that worked for now was going back to 14.04 LTS Kubuntu. No issues there.. no graphic bugs, no black screen, googletalk connection works, clock is fine and no issues with the taskbar icons. However, I would love to upgrade to 15.10 again... I love the design and the way it works way more than 14.10 (Which reminds me a lot at Debian 8.3)... Now I am not sure if this is a bug in particular. I also have an office Desktop with 15.10 installed. I also added the backports there and I have updated KDE and Plasma. Now that machine has no problems at all.... no graphic issues, no missing icons, flickering or Plasma crashes. Also no Black screen after login. Both machines use an on-board GPU. The Desktop uses an Intel Chip though, while the laptop uses an ATI Radeon chip. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas or any experience. Something I could try to fix this or to get around it in order to use 15.10 and possibly 16.04... ![]() Thanks in advance. Have a great day. Cheers, Ben |

moved to Plasma 5
the Telepathy issue should be posted to the KDE Telepathy forum noting if it works in KDE 4 |
