I'm Linux user but haven't use KDE before. Now I installed Fedora 23 with Plasma. But, it's messed up, I cannot use it at all.
Once I log in, I don't see bottom panel, although I can click on it blindly. If I start applications in that way or via desktop shortcut, I cannot see them although they are running, I see desktop background only. If I press Ctrl+Alt+F2 I get only a smaller desktop screen. I can only log out and then press Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get a terminal and log in and run startx. Only then I can use Plasma normally. I tried deleting .kde profile, without success. Please help. |

just so anyone reading this is clear - when you start with startx all is good you see and can use everything
with Fedora 23 you are running 5 not Kde 4, correct? 5 doesn't use ~/.kde except for KDE 4 apps that have not been ported afaik, in 5 config files are in ~/.config Is this a clean install or an upgrade from Fedora 2x ? does a new user experience the same? try removing ~/.cache try removing any plasma* or kwin* files in ~/.config |

This is a clean install.
Removing ~/.cache and plasma* and kwin* files in ~/.config didn't help. With new user also the same. |

If you open an app with alt+F2 do the apps's windows show?

Sounds like a conflict between the sddm GL context and all the GL contexts inside the session.
Press "SHIFT+Alt+F12" (*SHIFT*!!!) to suspend the compositor and see whether that makes any difference. |

No. I tried with "calc" and Kcalc doesn't show, but some widget Calc does. Alt+F2 is the only way to run a command.
Same.
I get black screen with a cursor. |

this looks appropriate https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7849988.html
if not and and per Luebking's suggestion it is a (different) SDDM issue you could try a different display manager not sure what is available in Fedora but to switch https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fe ... sktop.html

It said that user sddm already existed in video group.
For systemctl enable --force displaymanager.service if I type systemctl enable --force KDM.service (is that it?) I get Failed to execute: no such file or service. But I used system-switch-displaymanager command and changed to KDM. Same. Why I can run and see Calc "windowed widget"? |

try changing the rendering backend used
in krunner run command
or edit ~/.config/kwinrc and change the "backend=" line to Xrender

It didn't help. I didn't remember to check before, but I verified after the command that Xrender is there.
