I thought this would be simple. Turns out, it is not.
I am looking at an image in the browser - I have tried Firefox and Konqueror. I drag the image to the desktop. A small menu appears asking giving me: Widget -> Icon and Wallpaper -> Image as two options. If I select Icon, it produces a small icon on the dosktop. If I select Wallpaper, nothing happens!! How do I get this simple thing done?

Help us to help
Your plasma version ? (KinfoCenter - https://www.kde.org/applications/system/kinfocenter/ will tell it ) When you drag&drop - Is there error messages in the .xsession-errors ? At here Plasma 5.6.3 Drag&drop is not working from the browser to the plasma (wallpaper) desktop. A workaround is to drag&drop to the Dolphin or to the Folder view widget and then d&d from the Dolphin to the plasma desktop. |

KDE Plasma Version 5.5.5. Qt Version 5.6
Here are the last few lines from .xsession-errors: Error loading plugin "kcm_fileindexermonitor" "The shared library was not found." Plugin search paths are ("/usr/lib64/qt5/plugins", "/usr/bin") The environment variable QT_PLUGIN_PATH might be not correctly set Trying to use rootObject before initialization is completed, whilst using setInitializationDelayed. Forcing completion KIO::MimetypeJob(0x55bbad26e8e0) This is overkill. Invalid URL: QUrl("/home/sandip/.local/sharewallpapers//wallpapers/54537940feb3eb372fbb5e1111358182ec878dd1/preview_8__2_.jpg") QCoreApplication::arguments: Please instantiate the QApplication object first Lastly, web browser to dolphin to desktop works withour errors.

There are several older (plasma4) bug reports:
- Bug 300984 - Click-dragging remote images to the desktop and setting as wallpaper doesn't work: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=300984 - Bug 306996 - Drag and drop of wallpapers does not work if the image is remote (job fails): https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=306996 Maybe it is still broken ? |

Looks like it is. I will mark this question as answered. But it is quite sad that a DE as capable as KDE makes it so hard to set desktop background. By the way, is there an application or a widget that will do this for me? I mean, I click on a button and it fetches a random pic from select images sources and sets it as a desktop background?
