I have done a lot of web searches and find/grep in files to see where it is that krunner is remembering programs that are no longer installed. I have come up with nothing. I have seen many suggestions about looking in the ~/.kde and ~/.local directories, and I've done that and still turned up nothing.

Here's what is going on. I installed 3 different versions of an application from a tgz file. I did this in sequence. Each time I manually created an application menu entry. How I changed/removed the preview entry was different each time.
    # first install: created new entry
    # second install: edited existing entry ---> old entry was remembered by krunner so when I typed the prog's name, I had two results
    # third install: deleted existing entry, then created new one ---> now I have 3 options in krunner

Someone please be my hero and let me know where I can make krunner forget these entries that correspond to uninstalled apps? Thanks!!

I have exactly the same issue.

Anyone knows where is the database where krunner reads the stale results from?

I guess the problem is related to baloo file indexer as described here: viewtopic.php?f=83&t=124233

Still, if anyone knows of a way to clean old files without having to remove the complete baloo database, please let us know.
