Hallo guys.
I would like to activate video wallpapers on Plasma login with SDDM with Sabayon OS, 64bit and Kernel 4.13.
I found this thread here: https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=83&t=119463&p=394644&hilit=+plasma+video+wallpaper#p394644

and I have downloaded the plugin from git and installed at ~./.local/share/plasma/wallpapers, where I received a new directory org.kde.video.
Code: Select all
mkdir .local/share/plasma/wallpapers
cd .local/share/plasma/wallpapers
git clone https://github.com/halverneus/org.kde.video.git

When I now will change the desktop background and change from picture to video, I can pick a video file, but when I pick one, there is only a black screen. I don't have and I don't find mplayer in my Sabayon repo. Instead I use mpv or less often vlc to play movies and video files, often mp4 format.

Simple question: Is there a complete instruction how to install every part necessary for running video wallpapers, such as qt programs, qt plugins, gstreamer and gstreamer plugins and so on and so on? I cannot follow the instructions, more than this, I fear, that there are missing steps, provided as given knowledge, which I don't have.

Second: Is there any way to test a video wallpaper before activating in changing (setting) Plasma background?

Thank you for understanding and patience also.

Plasma wallpaper & lock screen background

As told at: viewtopic.php?f=83&t=119463&p=394644&hilit=+plasma+video+wallpaper#p394622

Plasma 5 wallpaper plugins are available at: https://store.kde.org/browse/cat/419

Video wallpaper plugin is at: https://store.kde.org/p/1213488/

As told at https://store.kde.org/p/1213488/:
The Video wallpaper will need gstreamer plugins to play video/audio.

Install:
kpackagetool5 -t Plasma/Wallpaper -i VideoWallpaper.tar.gz

Remove:
kpackagetool5 -t Plasma/Wallpaper -r VideoWallpaper

Downloading the VideoWallpaper.tar.gz from the KDE Store, not some git. And installing:

If you get the QtMultimedia is not installed:

Updgrade and install the QtMultimedia:

The Video wallpaper plugin has Readme button:

If you click it:
Description

Video wallpaper is a KDE plasma wallpaper / lock screen background plugin to play video files as background. The Video wallpaper plugin started as a KDE forums answer /1/.

Notes

The Video wallpaper will need gstreamer plugins to play video/audio. To get possible error messages launch the plasmashell or the lockscreen from the terminal /2/.

The CPU load will decrease if you use less compressed video format and use smaller resolution videos.

The Qt is lacking gapless media player /3/. The realod of the media can be hide by using two media players /4/ - option 'Use double player'.

With the latest plasma (post 5.10) the lock screen doesn't have the audio with the video wallpaper /5/.

The viewtopic.php?f=289&t=131783&start=45#p382975 will tell:

To get possible error messages

Launch the plasmashell or the lockscreen from the terminal.

Plasmashell

Terminal/konsole:
Code: Select all
$ kquitapp5 plasmashell
$ plasmashell

- If the preview screen is black
- if the video duration is negative
- You get the - Error: "Your GStreamer installation is missing a plug-in."

Then you need to install more GStreamer plugins !

With the Sabayon: https://packages.sabayon.org/quicksearc ... &x=11&y=11

Installing:
- gst-plugins-base
- gst-plugins-good
- gst-plugins-bad
- gst-plugins-libav

Restarting the plasmashell... and seems to work:

SDDM greeters

SDDM wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_De ... ay_Manager

New sddm greeters can be added from the KDE System Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Login Screen (SDDM)

Thank you very much for your quick, detailed post. Your instructions helped me to solve my problem.
The trouble for me was the number of gstreamer and gst plugins and also two versions of the four named gstreamer-plugins.
Now I have a video-wallpaper on my desktop. And for my lock screen it also works fine.
But I still don't get a video wallpaper for my first login screen. I tried breeze slider, but there is no breeze slider SDDM theme configuration

However, I'm very glad for your kind, successful help.

The 'breeze slider SDDM theme configuration' is part of the 'SDDM Theme Breeze Slider 2'. Released now.

It is a bundle of optional script tools to make the SDDM greeter testing a bit easier.

There is a Readme file - /usr/share/sddm/themes/breeze-slider2/Notes/README.html

Update on this one as the links are no longer valid.

Unfortunately the old Video https://store.kde.org/p/1213488/ and Video Playlist plugin links have vanished. That's unfortunate as it's been such a great plugin. I don't get why they aren't included by default.

I've found a replacement on GitHub https://github.com/halverneus/org.kde.video but it's not as robust and it would be great to have video playlist back. Anybody have an original copy to redist?

Thx

Login and Lock screen are different. Don't know why KDE Store removed breeze-slide, but now it seems the only way to do it is manually
https://nixdaily.com/how-to/add-video-b ... in-screen/
or using a SDDM theme with videos, like Aerial
https://github.com/3ximus/aerial-sddm-theme
