I had a headche looking for a way to launch the plasma menu with a keyboard shorcut, also trying to show the desktop no the dashboard.

in 4.2 to assing a custom shortcut for the menu would be pretty easy, just access to the applet config by right mouse button click and set from here
don't think there is a way already to assign a global shortcut for showing the desktop
