After almost ten years using Linux but, for no special reason, never KDE, I decided to try Kubuntu 18.04. Overall I'm very pleased with the experience, but I've been facing some display problems.

First is an unusually high degree of screen tearing. I used to get it with Ubuntu Mate (the distro I had been using for the last three years, before switching to Kubuntu), but not as much as I get now.

The other thing is that, some time after each reboot, a strange stripe appears over the icon names on my desktop (please see attached screenshot https://www.dropbox.com/s/3u2319ixy7z8l9r/icones.png?dl=0).

My hardware is an Intel i5, Gigabyte GA-Z97M-D3H with GeForce 1030 (the GPU's brand is also Gigabyte). I get equal screen tearing both with the proprietary (nvidia-driver-930) and the nouveau drivers.
