Plasma Activities x Virtual Desktops

When I change from one activity to another, all that changes in the desktop are the plasmoids but the windows stay just the same way. Plasma Activities and Virtual Desktops concepts seem very similar, but one groups plasmoids and the other windows.

When I change from "Development" activity to the "Photo" actity, the plasmoids change to what i want but Eclipse is still there on top of everything. So I have to change the virtual desktop as well, or I'll have many unrelated apps in my desktop. This is very confusing for me.

One of the cases described in one of the many plasma pages :
Riccardo is a 16 year old lay-about. He should be working on his chem homework but instead is playing on facebook and myspace. He has the plasmoids for different sets of friends in different groups according to clique and a grouping for his class work. When he hears his mom approaching he quickly zoom-and-pans to the work grouping.

The only problem is that the facebook or porn browser windows is still there and Riccardo doesn't get out of trouble. His mom gets mad at him and Riccardo gets mad at KDE.

Can someone explain this to me? Will this change? Is KDE going to kill windows concept, or merge it into a plasmoid?

According to the KDE 4.2 feature plan, an ActivityVirtual Desktop Affinity feature has been added to Plasma, so when you change Activities you can change Virtual Desktop. ( however you will still need your Task Manager applet configured only to show windows from the current virtual desktop for this to work as you desire )

It can be done, but it's an experimental feature and has no GUI for it.
When plasma is not running (e.g. "kquitapp plasma" from a terminal) edit $KDEHOME/share/config/plasmarc and locate the [General] section. There, add this line

Code: Select all
perVirtualDesktopViews=true

Save and restart plasma to have Activities linked to virtual desktops. Notice that as I said this feature is experimental and may have bugs.
Notice that this works with trunk (Beta 1 included IIRC).

Works here with kubuntu 9.04, it is more workable then when they are separate. Only thing that is not possible now is to change wallpapers. If the 2 merge, will the cashew survive our will it disappear and will it more like it is done in virtual desktop config way?

The cashew is going to stay, I think.

Well, I don't think they'll merge - at least not in the near future.
