I just upgraded to KDE 4.2 on openSUSE 11.1 (x86_64). I logged out, deleted my ~/.kde4 folder, and logged back into KDE4. However, the desktop appears only for a second, then crashes, then appears again, and then finally crashes with the following Bug message:
The application Plasma Workspace (plasma) crashed and caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV). It asks if I want a stack trace. I hit OK, and get the following output.
I can run KRunner and launch apps normally, but the desktop is just a black screen. Trying to run plasma from the shell gives the following output: $> plasma QLayout: Attempting to add QLayout "" to QWidget "", which already has a layout zak@silverchalice-studio:~> KCrash: Application 'plasma' crashing... sock_file=/home/zak89/.kde4/socket-silverchalice-studio/kdeinit4__0 QLayout: Attempting to add QLayout "" to QWidget "", which already has a layout The desktop appears for a second, then disappears and I get the above message and stack trace. I have heard one other person with this same problem using openSUSE. I don't know if it is openSUSE specific, however. Is anyone else getting this behavior? I searched bugs.kde.org and couldn't find anything, so I filed a bug report there, too.

I've had a similar crash message here on opensuse 11.0. I fixed it by upgrading all libqt4 packages to latest version from SUSE's KDE4 Factory repo (same one I use to install kde4.2)

Turned out to be a bug in the NetoworkManager plasmoid. Removing NM-kde4 "solved" the problem. I'm trying to investigate right now.

A zypper dup fixed the issue. Probably the same packages you mentioned. All is well now.
