All,
I spent some time searching for this - and can't seem to find a solid answer. I just upgraded Kubuntu 8.04 to 8.10. I have to say - a lot of good things about KDE 4.2 - some serious and obvious stability issues - but I'm certain those will get worked out. I've pretty much adapted to 4.2 now. Except one last major problem. My icon list in the task bar isn't "grouping" based on application type/name. I have around 25 or so icons ... and it's messy. Here's what it looks like: I'd like the "xterm" and "firefox" images to be grouped ... like they used to be in KDE 3.x. I've poked around at all of the obvious configuration locations, and can't seem to locate how to do it. I guessed it would be a Desktop Effects setting (System Settings -> Desktop -> All Effects), but I don't see anything relating to grouping the icons or any taskbar related effects plugins (besides Taskbar Thumbnails). Any pointers/help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks all. v/r Shane |

it is in 'task manager settings' which is accessed by right clicking on the task bar, it can be difficult to find the right place to click depending on the desktop theme but should be in the space between icons

You'd want to right-click in an empty area of the task manager, but since it's all full you'll have to open the panel config by clicking the Plasma icon at the right of the panel, and then right click on the task manager.
Select Task Manager Settings from the menu, and you should be able to configure grouping from there. |

Thanks to JontheEchinda and google01103 for the quick replies. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any settings relating to "grouping" ion the Task Manager Settings item. Here's a snapshot of what comes up when I open it:
I seem to be "missing" this feature?? Any other pointers are gratefully accepted! ...again - thanks for the awesome quick responses. v/r Shane |

That means you're running KDE 4.1.
You can find upgrade instructions to upgrade to KDE 4.2 at kubuntu.org. |

thanks, after awhile I always eventually found a spot to right click that worked but didn't know that entering settings mode would make it so much easier |

Wow. Okay. KDE 4.2 is sooooo much better than 4.1. Thanks a ton for bearing with me. I successfully upgraded to 4.2, and now I have the functionality I was looking for. |
