Taskbar issues

Fri Feb 20, 2009 5:45 pm
Hello, dear Kommunity,

Very much impressed with 4.2, but one component still behaves strange to me - the taskbar. First, KDE always starts with taskbar half-lengthed of the screen width, and I have to stretch it again and again. Is there a way to let it start stretched?

And second I've recently got:

Windows icons dissapeared somewhere, clock in the center, unmovable. Maybe this is a bug?

Thanks in advance!

normally all plasma settings are saved after a clean logout.. if your encounter problems you maybe have the wrong permissons on the files plasma-appletsrc plasmarc in your kde config folder.. or any other problem with this files.. a good idea would be to delete those two files.. then configure your desktop.. then logout.. then hopefully login to your configured desktop

Hello, waldelf,

Thanks for reply,

I've removed files you mentioned from .kde/share/config/, stretched taskbar, but it becomes shorter after re-login, i.e. no difference. During login there is a screen flick, looks like xorg swithes video adapter to higher resolution. So, I mean what if originaly taskbar is measured to stretch the low-resolution screen width, but stays unchanged after that switch?

Neat, so x.org is doing something silly (surprise) and plasma isn't getting told about it. In 4.2, kephal is supposed to be watching for these kinds of changes and notifying plasma and kwin about it. However, start up order between these components could be messing things up, or the resolution change could be happening at an inopportune moment, or plasma could be getting the notification but not handling it properly due to not being completely started up or some other such annoyance. Would have to see plasma's debug output to even start to have a chance at sorting this out. Being able to duplicate the set up would be handy, but I really wouldn't know where to start to duplicate such a scenario.

Hi, aseigo,

Thanks for reply,

We can duplicate this behaviour using a virtual machine or maybe even easier:

1) 800x600 login screen, do logon;
2) Plasma loads onto 800x600, including taskbar;
3) Display ajusts to 1280x1024, desktop extends, but taskbar stays the same size!

If there might be some useful testing I can perform, please let me know.

Thanks!
