Open YaST > Software Repositories. Add this repository - http://download.opensuse.org/repositori ... SUSE_11.1/
Then set its priority to "10" and accept. Next open YaST > Software Management. Set the filter to repositories, and select the newly added KDE 4.2 repository. From the menus then select Package > All in this list > Update if newer version available, then accept. If it displays any error messages before accept then cancel immediately. If it displays a error during the update, skip the error and at the end run Software Management again, repeating the above steps, but skip the Software Repositories part.

Then, using factory repos is a bad idea. The factory repos contains development packages for the next openSUSE release. You will find problems using those packages: mainly small problems/annoyances, but problems after all, and you will need to know how to face them. Run a search in the openSUSE forums to see what happened to people enabling factory repos in openSUSE 11.0... Just to get an idea.

Open Konsole and execute these commands, then log out and back in again: These will fully update your system to KDE 4.2.
If any errors are encountered, please post the errors back here. If packages cannot be found, ignore them ( enter 'i' ) then afterwards run steps 3 and 4 again.

Yes it is a lower case "L". You only need to provide your root password when it asks for it, you can do this from a ordinary user terminal.

The problem you're having is that you're not typing the full command. What you're typing is
You need to type 'sudo zypper' before the rest. For example :
If you do not have sudo zypper before, your system won't know what to do. sudo is the command to let your normal user run a command as root. And zypper is the program you're using to upgrade.
