I'm using Plasma's newsreader applets "news" and "rssnow". Both worked fine, but at the moment, both don't fetch news and I just don't know why. When starting the applets via plasmoidviewer, I get:
Code: Select all
plasmoidviewer(11152) KServiceFactory::findServiceByDesktopPath: "findServiceByDesktopPath:  not found"
plasmoidviewer(11152) News::connectToEngine: "http://www.tagesschau.de/xml/atom/ "

and nothing else happens. What's wrong?!

Run this command:
Code: Select all
plasmaengineexplorer

Is "rss" present in the list of data engines?

If you are using distribution packages, please ensure they are up to date. If you are not running KDE 4.2, then please upgrade, since KDE 4.2 ships with the RSS dataengine.

I use the KDE 4.2.1 Gentoo ebuilds. Which package should contain the RSS data engine? Perhaps, this is a Gentoo related problem which should be filed in ther Bugzilla.

The RSS data engine is shipped alongside Plasma in KDE Workspace ( kdebase/workspace ). It is dependent upon KDE Core, KDE Plasma which come from KDE Libraries ( kdelibs ) and KDE Syndication libraries, which comes from KDE PIM Libraries. ( kdepimlibs )

Actually, the Gentoo guys introduced an "rss" use flag in kde-base/plasma-workspace which seems to be turned off by default. I re-compiled the package with USE="rss", and now the applets work again. Thanks for the help :-)
