[SOLVED] No clock in system tray

Thu Mar 12, 2009 1:36 pm
My system tray no longer displays the clock. I can get a clock in plasma but I want it in the system tray as well (so i can still see it with when I have a loaded desktop). I was recently changing some display settings and later noticed it was gone. I'm not sure if that cause it or exactly what I changed that round. Any help would be appreciated.

Additional info:
1) Am a pretty new Linux user.
2) When I upgraded to 4.2 I failed to uninstall my plasma/widget stuff from my KDE 3 version thus some don't work. I'm not sure how linked the system tray and the widgets are but that may be relevant.

[SOLVED] No clock in system tray

Thu Mar 12, 2009 1:53 pm
I guess you mean "panel" and not "system tray". The panel is the whole bar at the bottom of your screen (if you haven't moved it), the system tray is a widget that shows icons of "docked" applications. The default panel consist of serveral widgets, including system tray.

The clock is yet another widget, and as other widgets, it can be placed on the desktop as well as in the panel. Just drag it to the desired location.

Cashew > Add Widgets. Select desired clock widget ( digital is the normal default ) then drag and then dropping it into the desired position on the panel should do the trick

[SOLVED] No clock in system tray

Thu Mar 12, 2009 2:00 pm
I appreciate the info so far. I've tried dragging & dropping 2 diff ways:

1) taking the widget digital clock i already had on my desktop and dragging it to the panel. It just sits behind the panel. No love there.

2) I tried to add a new widget (same digital clock) and tried dragging it from the list straight to the panel. Again, no love.

I suspect that either 1) I am somehow not dragging and dropping correctly (which is difficult to imagine but possible) or 2) I am experiencing some other quirk.

Click the cashew>add widget and select the clock widget you want then click Add. You can later move the widget on the panel.

[SOLVED] No clock in system tray

Thu Mar 12, 2009 7:40 pm
All,

Thank you. As I was typing a reply explaining how I still couldn't get this to work, it clicked. I have 2 cashews! I kept starting from the one on the top right of my desktop. Obviously the one in the panel itself would control the panel's widgets.

Thank you all and sorry I was a bit slow on the uptake.

That's right, if you add widgets from the panel's cashew, they'll end up in the panel.

However, you should be able to drag widget from/to panels (as long as the widgets are unlocked). So you weren't slow at all.
If you want to experiment further, click on the cashew in the panel and try to drag a widget (e.g. the clock) out of the panel.

RE: [SOLVED] No clock in system tray

Hans,

Thanks for the follow up. That doesn't really seem to work for me. If I click on the clock widget the calender pops up (no surprise there) but if I click to drag nothing happens (until I release, then the calender pops up). I can get the calender to dislodge & and I can move it but nothing else.

I wonder if my problem stems from my upgrade. As mentioned, I'm a novice to linux and, being a refuge from windows, know almost nothing about widgets. When I upgraded to 4.2 I noticed an instruction to remove my widgets from 3 b/c they weren't supported. I hate to admit I skipped that step (hoping to figure it out later). As a result, it seems some widgets work and others don't. Perhaps now I'm learning that others work, but not fully.

I guess I need to search for instructions on how to remove my widgets and get the 4.2 version.

Either way, thank you. I'm stoked to have my clock back and to have learned a bit more.

To move the widgets in (and out of) the panel, you first have to click on the panel cashew so the panel "toolbar" appears.

Are you sure you use KDE 4.2? You can check by opening a KDE application (e.g. Dolphin) and choose Help -> About KDE in the menubar.

I don't understand what you mean with 'remove widgets from 3' since KDE3 didn't have those widgets (if you don't count Superkaramba etc.). You can install packages in Adept Manager (at least I think that's what it's called in Kubuntu).

You know, now that you mention it, no, I was not in 3. I was in an early version of 4. I upgraded from 3 to 4.1-something in mid-late December. It was going from 4.1 to 4.2 that required removing plasmoids (or widgets, i forget which word they used) because there was some incompatibility issue.

What package should I search for if I'm going to try and remove then re-add the plasmoids? (additionally, how big is the difference between plasmoids & widgets?)

thanks again.

I would recommend simply ensuring that all packages are up to date. Your package manager should offer some method to upgrade all from a specified repository.
