I am running KDE 4 under SUSE 11.2 - 64 bit.
I inadvertently removed the system tray item that showed the open applications.
I don't know how to restore it?

You mean the task bar?

Right click on the panel and select "Unlock Widgets" (if they are locked).

Next, click the yellow cashew icon on the end of the panel, and click "Add Widgets". Find "Task Manager" and drag it to the panel.

They were already unlocked (probably how I managed to delete it in the first place).

OK, now it's back, but I don't get the stuff that was there yesterday (clock, running applet icons, etc). These appear to be overlayed with the task manager. When I try to use the panel settings to move the edges, all it does is resize the whole panel. How do I resize the task manager alone to allow the other icons to show as well?

You can't, but the task manager shouldn't take the other widgets' space. Could you please post a screenshot?

OK, that didn't work.

I've got a .jpg file - how do I post it?
I tried using the insert image icon and that's what I got.

You'll have to upload that to the Internet so that we could see it... ;-)

You could just press PrintScreen on your keyboard to take a screenshot :)

You didn't add the system tray widget, click the yellow cashew on the panel>add widgets and add the system tray. You can move it on the panel to the location you want.

When I added the system tray widget, I got the piece in the middle that shows the open programs. That covered the existing icons. I can move it to uncover them, but then it covers the icons on the right, or left, depending on which way I move it.

Now I've managed to delete the whole panel and can't get to the KDE menu or anything else.

Time to reset your Plasma configuration. Press Alt + F2, and enter "konsole" then execute it.

Now type these commands:
Code: Select all
killall -9 plasma
rm -rf $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/config/plasm*
rm -rf $(kde4-config --localprefix)/share/apps/plasma/
plasma &

Done. Plasma should now load with its default configuration, and you can close Konsole.

Thank you. I am back where I need to be and think I'll save this thread for future reference.
