I'm fairly new to the world of Kubuntu. I recently upgraded from version 8.10 to 9.04. I was having trouble connecting to my wireless internet and in trying some solution I found on the web I somehow seem to have "deleted" the Network Management widget! It's not available in the "Add Widgets" dialog and I can't seem to find any other way of configuring my internet connections.
I went to System Setting -> Add and Remove Software and tried to install the network-manager-kde and plasma-widget-network-manager packages. I get an error saying "Unknown error - System Settings. Details: network-manager-kde was not installed." Without any further details. The same happens for networkstatus and plasma-widget-network-manager. They do not get installed. I have the libqt4-network, network-manager and network-manager-gnome installed. When I try to install these packages through the Konsole using this command: sudo aptitude install network-manager-kde it says "No candidate version found for network-manager-kde" Help?! I'm using KDE version 4.2.2 Thanks! |

Hi, you want wicd which I believe is in the repos now, ergo:
sudo apt-get install wicd It is a superior network manager in that it works. Simple as that.

Thanks toad! I was trying to install wicd initially and encountered various problems. That's why I was trying to get back to the plasma widget as it had worked for me at one point.
So I think my system is really messed up. I tried "sudo apt-get install wicd" and it gives me an error "E: Couldn't find package wicd". I think it might be dependency issues. I feel like i've mucked it up too much. Should I just reinstall? |

I managed to install wicd from the deb file and it was successful. I can't get it to run on Kubuntu though. I go to KMenu-> Internet-> Wicd Network Manager and when I click on it, it looks like it is launching it but nothing happens.
Am I missing some other setting?! greatly appreciate the help! |

You may need to start the service. I do not know if Ubuntu has a services manager of any description, but be sure to stop the NetworkManager service when you start the Wicd service, since they will conflict.

I was finally able to get Wicd working... I followed the instructions on this post. The problem was that I downloaded the deb from SourceForge instead of the Jaunty's repository. The sourceforge deb file installs it in the incorrect python version folder.
Thanks for all the help! |
