Hi,
I'm really disapointed to see that some really good KDE basic systray applications, like Kweather, and some others are not usable as Plasmoid extensions ... or I don't understand how to use them or find them ? I'm on Kubuntu 9.04. At this moment I'm using what is translated in french by "Bulletin météorologique Version 1.0" (impossible to find an english reference for it except author is Shawn Starr) ... and this application need to be reconfigured at each reboot of my PC, and the icon in the "Systray like" of KDE4 is not the icon of the actual weather ... you need to move your mouse on it to get the current weather ... not really usefull... So please where is the basic but really performant Kweather in Plasmoid please ?? Regards, Hervé |

The original KWeather application was likely not ported to KDE 4. This is the "Weather" plasmoid which behaves differently. It should be left running when you shutdown your system, otherwise it will lose its configuration.
It is also possible you have a damaged Plasma configuration, preventing it from saving its configuration correctly. You can reset the configuration of the Plasma desktop back to its defaults with the following command:
Note that this will reset all desktop preferences, including your wallpaper selection, desktop plasmoids and panel configuration.

Yep I never kill anything before shuting down my system ... Ok I have tested this ... and it's still not running as you said ... I have effectively loose all my plasmoid configuration .. selected again Weather, add it to my plasmoids ... then selected Paris for my city in BBC choice. Then I have restarted my PC ... and I still have a white icon with a question mark inside ... and if I go to the configuration option of Weather, the city is empty set to PopupApplet ... ;-( I'm a little dispointed ...

I used kweather all the time too and was disappointed with the weather plasmoids too. I found YAWP (Yet Another Weather Plasmoid) on kde-look.org and it is fantastic. If there was a way to nominate this plasmoid for inclusion with default KDE I would. It is desktop plasmoid if you want and also can go in the panel like kweather. It has forecast and current satellite image pop up when you hover over the panel icon. I use the SVN version and is super easy to compile since it comes with a "install.sh" you run and it just does it. If you are looking for a weather plasmoid I highly recommend YAWP. |

TO EVERYONE: It's coming for KDE 4.4 and will be backported to 4.3.x as well, I am 60% done porting the kweather source to plasma so it can be used. Stay tuned..
@Cader : As much as the 'other' plasmoids look pretty, we're not trying to make widgets look out of place. This plasmoid is trying to fit the theme of plasma like the other plasmoids/applets. That said, there will be some changes to the layout and such, animations would be nice but Qt's new animation/physics framework isn't ready yet so not for KDE 4.4. I feel your pain everyone, there is light coming, and so much more to do Shawn. |
