Hi all, I am running Linux Mint 7 and I installed KDE by installing the kubuntu_desktop package from the ubuntu repositories. Yes I know that a mint_desktop package will be along later but I don't see why I can't just install kde anyway.
Anyway, although I can log into KDE and everything appears fine when I get a desktop I cannot click on anything. I can open apps with gnome-do and then move the windows around and do things within the applications, but I have no access to menus and have a blank unclickable desktop. I have tried reinstalling and I also tried creating a new user in case it was because of residual settings in my $HOME but got the same thing. Any ideas? |

Have you installed Plasma and the related core Plasmoids and Containments?

Ummm... no. OK, I'll try that. What are they? Part of the KDE 4 revamp?
I am a reverse newb, haven't really used KDE in 6 or 7 years... I was a die hard WindowMaker fan, but ubuntu won me over to gnome, so I thought I may as well have another look at KDE EDIT: Well, I tried to install plasma and saw that the kubuntu_desktop meta package I had installed, selected kdebase-plasma and kdebaseplasma-addons, so I guess I did have them installed.

Can you please ensure that "Plasma" is running? If it is please try the following...
If it isn't running, just try running the following. If nothing changes, try the above.

Hi, sorry for the late reply but I finally figured out what the problem was. For some reason, under default settings the desktop would not load unless there was an active network connection. I believe this is related to the fancy "desktop" mode of plasma-desktop. I managed to fix this behaviour by running a terminal (through gnome-do) and then
I believe this is related to this bug which doesn't allow NetworkManager to run if it has already been run once by another user (my gnome session in my case). That combined with reloading plasma-desktop as you suggested fixed my problem. Thanks for your help!
