Plasma Crashes with code 11

Tue Jun 30, 2009 8:27 pm
Below is a paste of the error details.

kde4-config -v
Qt: 4.4.3
KDE: 4.1.3 (KDE 4.1.3) "release 8.13"
kde4-config: 1.0

OS = SLES 11.0

I'm manually creating plasma-appletsrc which seems to function as I see the expected icons in the expected places though I'm thinking this is the cause of my problems. I don't have a consistent way of causing the crash though I have some that work some times though they take time to set up.

Any idea of the cause, what to look for or how to approach debugging these?

Unfortunately I can't upgrade but I would like to hear if these kind of failures will be fixed in a more current version of KDE4.

Thank you .

You should be able to use packages from the openSUSE OBS to upgrade to KDE 4.2+.

Thank you for the response.

Unfortunately I must stick with what comes with SLES 11.0.
At some point I will be able to move on from 11.0 to something greater e.g. 11.1 :)
so it would be good to know that these kind of problems will be fixed with newer versions of KDE4.

Outside of upgrading KDE4 do you have any other suggestions ?
Possible to correct by tweaking the contents of plasma-appletsrc and if
so how to approach debugging short of hit and miss of removing/adding entries ?

Here is an example entry :

[Containments][3][Applets][6]
geometry=80,2,36,36
immutability=1
plugin=icon
zvalue=0

[Containments][3][Applets][6][Configuration]
Url=file:///usr/share/applications/MozillaFirefox.desktop

Even some documentation out there would be helpful but that doesn't appear to be available either.

Again thank you.

Try checking on a fresh, new user to see if you can reproduce the crash reliably. In may be possible that your custom plasma-appletsrc may be corrupt.

Again thank you.

I have also tried creating plasma-appletsrc using the logged in interface. In other words

1) kquitapp plasma
2) Deleted plasma-appletsrc and plasmarc
3) Logged out/in to freshen up
4) Used the desktop interface to tweak the desktop to my liking.
5) Logged out/in again which created new plasma-appletsrc and plasmarc files
6) Reloaded the OS and this time used those just created plasma-appletsrc and plasmarc files to create the desktop with my desired settings (kquitapp plasma, copied files in place, execute plasma and then shutdown -r) and though it didn't crash the same way immediately it did crash once and once a GUI 'logout' resulted in coming to a green screen log in prompt. It does appear that things eventually stablize with use but it would much nicer to not get these crashes.

Anything else to try short of an upgrade ?
