Anybody else notice that the plasma binary is now cpu hungry'ish in the rc1 release then the previous beta? And it doesn't matter if desktop effects are enabled or not. Not really lot's of cpu but 1->3% of a cpu whereas before more like 0% and on accaision it spiked to 8%

Not really. Sure, plasma takes up to around 3% or so here as well but it did in beta2 as well.

There's an issue with the task manager which would slowly get more and more CPU. I'm unsure if it was fixed in time for RC1. I know it's fixed now in branch.

as restarting plasma-desktop resolves this i'd say the patch did not make rc1

in 4.3.4 it still consumes a lot of cpu (9-14% of my 2.4 GHz p4)
